His loyalists began by firing career prosecutors who ran those cases and then asked the FBI to turn over details on all FBI employees who worked on any of the January 6 investigations. <\/p>\n<p>That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/04\/politics\/fbi-employees-tuesday\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">turned out to be over 5000 employees<\/a>. For reference, the FBI boasts around 38,000 employees, so Trump is apparently looking to fire 13 percent of the FBI. Hopefully this trims at least one of the increasingly redundant CBS FBI-colon shows (<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/fbi-spinoff-cia-cbs-1236282466\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it won\u2019t<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, some of these FBI employees would rather not be put on a government enemies list, and they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/02\/04\/fbi-agents-jan-6-cases-lawsuit-00202376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">suing the Justice Department over it<\/a>. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.277103\/gov.uscourts.dcd.277103.1.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">two<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.277085\/gov.uscourts.dcd.277085.1.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">lawsuits<\/a>\u00a0(so far anyway) argue that handing over their names is a naked prelude to a rash of entirely preordained retaliatory firings. Helpfully, Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove sent the email seeking these names under the subject line \u201cTerminations,\u201d in case you expected this administration to avoid a boneheaded paper trail.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the FBI Agents Association, which represents over 14,000 current and former agents, has <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fbi-justice-department-trump-762d22f21f4e27b99c94bd78160fb0cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">also gone to Congress asking for help<\/a>, which is like depending on Wile E. Coyote to catch tonight\u2019s dinner.<\/p>\n<p>A standard that federal employees are better off refusing orders they disagree with would backfire on Trump pretty quickly. Thankfully, consistency isn\u2019t the goal here. Trump\u2019s real goal isn\u2019t just to fire these specific employees \u2014 it\u2019s to instill fear across the Bureau. He\u2019s not opposed to politically motivated investigations \u2014 obviously, <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/02\/turning-over-u-s-attorneys-office-to-conspiracy-theorist-working-out-as-expected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">as his dingbat U.S. Attorney is trying to spin Chuck Schumer as issuing death threats<\/a> \u2014 he just wants a police force that understands that it should look the other way whenever <em>his<\/em> people commit crimes. <\/p>\n<p>On that note, anyone who worked on the Epstein files might want to dust off their resume just in case.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuits are just getting started, and Congress will have to decide if it\u2019s willing to let the executive branch treat the FBI like its personal security force. Either way, we\u2019re about to see whether career law enforcement officers get thrown under the bus just for following the evidence.
