My brothers and I had each other\u2019s backs, and we figured things out together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There might have been a lot of freedom in some regards, but with three older brothers dating was never easy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not allowed to talk to boys at all,\u201d says Cross. \u201cI mean when I finally got my parents to agree to my going on my first date, the poor guy drove all the way up this long, long driveway and before he even got out of the car my parents made him turn around and leave!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he was such a sweet guy,\u201d she adds with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>As idyllic as her \u00abWild West\u00bb childhood may have been, this spirited young adventurer was eager to trade rural life for the excitement of the big city, itching to break free and embrace everything it had to offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I graduated high school, I moved away,\u201d she says, suddenly becoming quietly introspective. \u201cOnce I did, I became a completely different person. Growing up, I didn\u2019t realize how much more there was out there in the world, until I moved away and went to college. Unlike many who discover their calling in graduate school or later, Cross says she declared her intent at an age when most of her peers were still mastering the alphabet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really one of my earliest memories,\u201d says Cross. \u201cI know for sure it was kindergarten because my mom kept the drawing that clearly shows I knew even at that age I wanted to be a lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fueled by a newfound passion ignited in law school, Cross dove in headfirst, determined to soak up every bit of knowledge she could. She deliberately chose Atlanta\u2019s John Marshall School of Law for its flexible night school program, enabling her to balance a full-time job during the day with rigorous evening classes and late-night study sessions. It was a demanding schedule, but her drive and determination carried her through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, law school changed the way I process information,\u201d says Cross. \u201cI don\u2019t think law school teaches you how to be a lawyer, but rather, it teaches you how to think. Literally now, everything I do or consider doing, I stop and think, \u2018what is the risk versus the reward.\u2019 I look at things completely differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was also where she found her first mentor\u2014a professor who didn\u2019t just teach but profoundly influenced her path. This mentor pushed her to exceed her own expectations, challenging her to refine her skills and dig deeper into her potential. More than that, he inspired Cross to strive for excellence, not only as a student but as a future attorney dedicated to mastering her craft and making a meaningful impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had one professor, Jeffery Van Detta,\u201d she recalls, a small smile tugging at her lips. \u201cHe was the one with the reputation for being so tough. You know, the one nobody wants to pull. Of course, I got him not just for one class but for three years! And, every single class he would cold call on me. I was the only one he did that to! But, as much as I hated it, it made me come fully prepared to every single class because I didn\u2019t want to be embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time I just thought he was being mean and trying to make my life miserable, but I finally realized how much he taught me not only about being fully prepared, but also how to think on my feet when caught off guard. It\u2019s funny because we\u2019re friends now. In fact, I heard from him recently. He told me he frequently talks about me in his classes. This head start allowed her to take the February bar exam, which she passed with flying colors, and she wasted no time diving into the job market. Her ambition quickly paid off with a sweet job offer. But just as her career was about to take off, the COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down. With offices shuttered and hiring freezes in place, the position she had enthusiastically anticipated vanished, leaving Cross to regroup and re-imagine her next steps in an uncertain landscape.<\/p>\n<p>However, with her characteristic zeal Cross takes a philosophical view, believing that everything happens for a reason. For her, that reason turned out to be a serendipitous connection with a second, equally impactful mentor. This mentor not only guided her through the challenges of launching her career but also inspired her to take the bold step of establishing her own firm\u2014a move that would define her path as an attorney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel I had the best mentor anyone could ask for,\u201d she says. \u201cHe allowed me to skip basically 16 years of practice because he taught me everything. He went to court with me, and in fact still does sometimes. He really taught me how to run a business. But honestly, number one, he taught me how to treat my clients. He\u2019s one of the best and most respected criminal defense attorneys in the state and a super cool, good friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to pinpoint whether Cross\u2019s all-in dedication and round-the-clock commitment stem from her own unrelenting passion or if they were inspired by the influence of her friend and mentor. Either way, this driven attorney doesn\u2019t just work for her clients\u2014she seems to thrive on it, embracing a tireless approach that sets her apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really do work 24\/7,\u201d she says. \u201cBut it\u2019s exactly what I want to do. I love being available for my clients. On weekends, I\u2019ll often head to the jail when someone gets arrested. A lot of lawyers stick to a 9-to-5 schedule, but I\u2019d rather someone call me than sit in jail feeling scared or uncertain. To me, it\u2019s not a burden\u2014it\u2019s what I was meant to do, and I absolutely love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Specializing in DUI defense, Cross is known for her tireless work ethic, strategic approach, and personal investment in her clients\u2019 cases.
