The Harvard Law grad was a Biglaw partner \u2014 of the equity variety \u2014 at Dykema Gossett, described as a \u201cstar\u201d trial attorney by colleagues. As Dykema CEO Leonard Wolfe <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/business-and-practice\/super-bowl-lix-ref-draws-on-law-training-to-make-big-game-calls\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Bloomberg Law<\/a>, \u201cRon consistently demonstrated a level of knowledge and excellence that led to a successful legal career.\u201d Wolfe continued, saying, \u201cHe also was a clear leader, as involved in the business of the firm as he was with individual lawyers learning their craft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Torbert retired from the law in 2019, but he hasn\u2019t taken retirement as an opportunity to back away from intense situations. He\u2019s also an NFL referee \u2014 and took the lead officiating position in last night\u2019s Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.<\/p>\n<p>You might not assume that lawyer and NFL ref are jobs that have much in common, but Torbert can draw the connections between his passions. \u201cBeing a lawyer has helped me to be a better official,\u201d Torbert said. \u201cIn both fields, you take in information, apply rules and the philosophy behind them, and reach a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And fellow lawyer-cum-NFL ref Clete Blakeman, of personal injury law firm Carlson &amp; Blakeman, said Torbert is suited to the Super Bowl job, \u201cRon is well-deserving of this assignment. He is a true professional.\u201d He added, Torbet is, \u201cAlways the man who is calm, cool, and collected.\u201d Super Bowl 59 was Torbert\u2019s second Super Bowl officiating gig, but his first time in the lead role.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the game, the officiating came under a lot of focus, as conspiracy theorist speculated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jayginsbach\/2025\/02\/08\/super-bowl-lix-referee-assignments-and-do-refs-favor-the-chiefs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the refs favor<\/a> Kansas City. An early questionable offensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesnownews.com\/world\/us\/us-buzz\/ron-torbert-referee-siding-with-kansas-city-chiefs-aj-brown-pass-interference-super-bowl-article-118100830\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pass interference call<\/a> against the Eagles\u2019 AJ Brown did not help matters.
