Imagine a press conference during which President Donald Trump makes this surprising announcement:\u00a0\u201cIf the situation in the Gaza Strip isn\u2019t resolved by March 15, the United States will drop a nuclear bomb on Gaza City.\u201d<\/p>\n

There would naturally be horror on the left:<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be 2 million dead!\u00a0He can\u2019t do that!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a war crime!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo far, there\u2019s only been talk of genocide in Gaza.\u00a0That would be actual genocide!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States is the only country in the world to have used atomic weapons. And now we\u2019re going to do it again? Where\u2019s our morality? The shame; the shame!\u201d<\/p>\n

Islamic terrorists, on the other hand, would be motivated:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought Israel was the most evil country in the world. We were wrong. The Great Satan is in fact the Great Satan.\u00a0 The barracks in Lebanon and the Twin Towers on 9\/11 were just warm-up acts. It\u2019s time to unlock the gates of Hell.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MAGA faithful, of course, would be impressed by Trump\u2019s brilliance:<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump\u2019s a real estate developer.\u00a0He knows that your opening bid should always be a little over the top. Trump\u2019s just starting a negotiation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump\u2019s my kind of guy. He thinks outside the box.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody\u2019s solved the Gaza problem in 70 years. Trump\u2019s not going to nuke the Palestinians, and this will get people thinking about new possible solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just Trump\u2019s way of clearing out the Gaza Strip so we can start building hotels there. Now we know that Gaza will be cleared out by March 14. We won\u2019t have to drop the bomb. And we\u2019ll move in the bulldozers on March 15 to start the new development.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Trump didn\u2019t threaten to nuke Gaza, then no other Arab state would have any incentive to accept displaced Palestinians or to contribute to a reconstruction effort. Now that Trump\u2019s going to nuke the Palestinians, Egypt and Jordan will have to take in more refugees and cough up some dough.\u201d<\/p>\n

And of course the right-wing nutjobs on social media would go further still:<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo million dead? It\u2019s a start.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love Trump. He shows that America\u2019s tough. Now the world respects us. Trump \u201928!\u201d<\/p>\n

As for me?<\/p>\n

Sometimes, a stupid idea is not brilliant. Sometimes, a stupid idea is just a stupid idea.<\/p>\n
