Tom Goldstein, revered Supreme Court litigator turned cautionary tale, has officially traded his D.C. home \u2014 the one prosecutors say he secured by lying to mortgage lenders \u2014 for a spot in the Chesapeake Detention Facility in Baltimore. After initially lawyering up with some of Trump\u2019s legal team<\/a> \u2014 arguably one of his better decisions (we\u2019re grading on a heavy curve) \u2014 Goldstein abruptly decided to represent himself. They say the lawyer representing themselves has a fool for a client, but if the coverage of Goldstein\u2019s decision is anything to go by, the strategy might\u2019ve been to play up his financial woes while arguing that it violated his Sixth Amendment rights if he couldn\u2019t access his home to pay for legal counsel. <\/p>\n

Of course his plea of poverty hit a snag when the federal government called his bluff, claiming that Goldstein had received $8 million in crypto and transferred $6 million of it. <\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Sullivan was not amused by these allegations, revoking Goldstein\u2019s bond, sending him straight to Baltimore\u2019s maximum-security correctional facility. <\/p>\n
