The policy devastation left in their wake will likely last decades, but there is also a more personal toll, with thousands of federal employees suddenly out of work. And a bunch of them are lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>Already former federal government lawyers have taken to the job market, saturating the lateral market \u2014 particularly in Washington, D.C. Bloomberg Law <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/business-and-practice\/trumps-exiting-government-lawyers-swamp-dc-firms-with-resumes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that Biglaw firms are inundated with applicants. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Resumes are flowing from lawyers who have worked at the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and Internal Revenue Service, said Kristin Koehler, managing partner of Sidley Austin\u2019s DC office. \u201cThere\u2019s high numbers of them and really extraordinary talent that\u2019s out on the market right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And it\u2019s not like it\u2019s just Sidley seeing this flood of resumes \u2014 Haley Lelah, global director of talent acquisition and integration at McDermott Will &amp; Emery, said, \u201cWe\u2019re seeing probably at least double the amount of usual applicants. This is definitely a unique situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishbowlapp.com\/post\/hi-what-should-attorneys-with-the-federal-government-do-to-make-themselves-marketable-in-light-of-our-work-being-so-specific\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on Fishbowl <\/a>newly out of work attorneys are looking for tips to make their resume stand above the rest.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"795\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/abovethelaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-19-at-1.30.44%E2%80%AFPM-795x1024.png?resize=795%2C1024&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1150946\" title=\"\"><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They\u2019ll need whatever leg up they can find too. Because as Stephen Springer, managing partner of recruiter Major Lindsey Africa\u2019s DC office, notes, candidates are not in the best position to negotiate with firms when they don\u2019t have a book of business, \u201cThere\u2019s only so many dollars that they can put forward to people that are highly skilled, and will probably be very successful in the private sector, but don\u2019t carry an immediate book of business with them.\u201d Plus, as another recruiter, Justine Donahue of Macrae, observes, when it comes to the job market, \u201cSupply is already outweighing demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And while the talent glut is certainly appealing to Biglaw firms, they have to tread carefully. Because many of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/13\/business\/trump-deregulation-firing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the federal agencies<\/a> these attorneys hail from have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/02\/11\/nx-s1-5293165\/cfpb-russell-vought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slowed down<\/a> or even halted enforcement. Meaning there <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/business-and-practice\/trump-bribery-order-threatens-big-law-anti-corruption-practices\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">isn\u2019t going to be a ton of work flowing to Biglaw firms<\/a> in these practice areas either.<\/p>\n<p>So the rank-and-file, less-experienced attorneys are having the hardest time riding this wave. They\u2019ll have to be out there grinding and networking, figuring out just how disruptive losing their federal job is going to be to their careers (and lives).
