Diversifying classrooms has benefits: broadening the likelihood of cultural exchange and encouraging opportunities for differing viewpoints that can challenge students\u2019 given assumptions being chief among them. It also didn\u2019t hurt that the ABA required law schools to foster diversity if they intended to gain or keep their accreditation. Between the dueling ABA and Trump mandates, something had to give if law schools were to get out of the double bind. The ABA gave out first. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/american-bar-association-suspends-law-school-dei-rule-enforcement-2025-02-21\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a> has coverage:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The American Bar Association will temporarily suspend enforcement of its diversity and inclusion standard for law schools.<\/p>\n<p>The ABA\u2019s Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar voted on Friday to halt enforcement of its current standard until August 31 while it reviews a pending proposed revision to the rule.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I wouldn\u2019t invest too much hope in the \u201ctemporariness\u201d of this suspended enforcement. Not sure how many revisions are in the queue, but I\u2019m willing to bet that the final standard for law schools will amount to \u201cHey man, do whatever it takes to maintain school eligibility for government funding\u201d <em>at best<\/em>. The ABA has been struggling to establish strong public-facing arguments for diversity since <em>SFFA<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2024\/02\/aba-committee-decides-to-diversify-diversity-it-should-come-with-a-clear-reason-why-thats-important\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">despite the brainstorming meetings to rebrand the importance of diversity<\/a> \u2014 there\u2019s no chance this will be the moment they decide to draw a line in the sand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/business\/costco-shareholders-dei-practices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and pull a Costco<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Schools like Cornell, Vanderbilt, and ASS Law were ahead of the curve and modified or scrubbed mentions of DEI from their webpages.
