In 2011, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/la-xpm-2011-mar-12-la-me-mel-gibson-20110312-story.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pleaded no contest<\/a> to misdemeanor battery of a former girlfriend and was recorded making death threats against her. So, yeah, he can\u2019t own firearms. <\/p>\n<p>But Gibson  is also Donald Trump\u2019s special little snowflake, otherwise known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/mel-gibson-responds-donald-trump-envoy_n_678a0c7fe4b0b60c1345f882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cspecial ambassador\u201d<\/a>\u00a0to Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>Former Justice Department pardon attorney Elizabeth G. Oyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/10\/us\/politics\/justice-department-mel-gibson.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the New York Times<\/a> she was pressured by the Trump administration to recommend the restoration of Gibson\u2019s gun rights. Oyer was put on a working group to assess the restoration of gun rights for people convicted of crimes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>She said she was told that the working group would generate a list of candidates to get back their gun rights, as part of a longer-term effort to have the attorney general restore such rights to some individuals. Her office, she said, came up with an initial batch of 95 people she considered worthy of consideration, made up principally of people whose convictions were decades old, who had asked for the restriction to be lifted and for whom Ms. Oyer\u2019s office thought the risk of recidivism was low.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Lethal Weapon star was not on Oyer\u2019s list. She received a call from\u00a0U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche\u2019s office noting that Gibson \u201chas a personal relationship with President Trump and that should be sufficient basis for me to make a recommendation and that I would be wise to make the recommendation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the request disturbed Oyer, she notes, \u201cGiving guns back to domestic abusers is a serious matter that, in my view, is not something that I could recommend lightly, because there are real consequences that flow from people who have a history of domestic violence being in possession of firearms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0gun\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/everytownresearch.org\/report\/guns-and-violence-against-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">safety advocacy group Everytown<\/a> notes, domestic abusers that own a gun are five times more likely to kill their partners than those without. And it\u2019s a position Oyer agrees with, saying, \u201cThis is dangerous.
