That\u2019s great news for them, but the firm isn\u2019t out of the woods yet.<\/p>\n<p>During the TRO hearing, Perkins Coie\u2019s attorney, Dane Butswinkas <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/this-biglaw-firm-could-be-donald-trumps-next-target\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of Williams &amp; Connolly<\/a>, noted the firm has lost clients every day since the the EO was issued. He said the EO \u201ctruly is life-threatening. It will spell the end of the law firm.\u201d\u00a0(Interesting side note on Butswinkas, before returning to Biglaw he was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wc.com\/News\/136801\/Dane-Butswinkas-Resumes-Trial-Practice-at-Williams-Connolly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">general counsel at Tesla<\/a> \u2014 W&amp;C described the work as \u201cassisting Elon Musk and Tesla, Inc.,\u201d which adds just another level to this story.)<\/p>\n<p>The potential client issues are likely to continue for Perkins Coie, despite the clear legal victory. The impulse to obey in advance is prevalent in corporate America, and, while they may like Perkins Coie as their attorneys, clients may <em>not<\/em> want to capture the attention of the (notably vindictive) president. As former Wachtell partner George Conway <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/business-and-practice\/judge-blocks-trump-order-targeting-perkins-coie-for-clinton-work\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Bloomberg Law<\/a>, \u201cIt was essential that Perkins Coie win this, but the problem is everyone in the government knows that the president does not like this particular law firm.\u201d He continued, \u201cPeople know if they work with Perkins Coie, they will earn the displeasure of the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Janet Stanton, partner at Adam Smith, Esq., echoed the sentiment, \u201cThe issue is that clients are spooked. And the lawyers must react to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Judge Beryl Howell noted during the TRO hearing, the legal profession was \u201cwatching in horror\u201d at what\u2019s happening to Perkins Coie. Because the ramifications of the EO are pretty extensive. John Morley, a Yale Law professor who studies the industry said, \u201cThis isn\u2019t like an ordinary business where it can go through a few lean years and come out as something smaller. Law firms aren\u2019t like that.
