That\u2019s no small ask \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/03\/14\/harvard-law-israel-endowment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">billions of dollars are in play<\/a>. The votes are in and the overwhelming majority of Harvard Law students voted in favor of the school divesting from entities that take part in Israel\u2019s war in Gaza. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2025\/3\/14\/hls-divestment-referendum-passes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Crimson<\/a> has coverage:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Harvard Law School student body voted on Thursday to call on the University to divest from Israel \u2014 delivering a decisive endorsement of language that Law School administrators harshly criticized before it went up for a vote.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution, which called on Harvard to \u201cdivest from weapons, surveillance technology, and other companies aiding violations of international humanitarian law, including Israel\u2019s genocide in Gaza and its ongoing illegal occupation of Palestine,\u201d passed with 72.7 percent of votes in favor, with 842 students participating. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>HLS was very quick to clarify that the opinions of its voting student body are not in line with the institution\u2019s stance. Part of the statement written by Jeff Neal \u2014 the school\u2019s spokesperson \u2014 took issue with the \u201cneedlessly divisive referendum,\u201d saying that it ran against the student government\u2019s stated objective of \u201cfostering community.\u201d I don\u2019t know, ~73% of people agreeing that a thing violates international human law seems pretty community building for folks who care about the rule of (international) law.<\/p>\n<p>HLS students aren\u2019t the only ones who have come to similar conclusions: Harvard\u2019s School of Public Health held a referendum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2024\/6\/4\/hsph-students-vote-israel-divestment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in which 80% of the voters thought that the school should divest<\/a>. While it is worth noting that HSPH\u2019s voter turnout was much lower, the outcomes from these two schools may encourage other subsets of Harvard to speak up. That\u2019s kind of how protest- and community-focused movements work, actually. <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2024\/10\/so-much-for-free-speech-harvard-law-students-punished-for-reading-together-at-campus-library\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Students peacefully protest a thing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2024\/10\/harvard-doubles-down-on-protest-retaliation-punishes-teachers-for-studying-in-library\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">then professors show solidarity and join in protest<\/a>, another school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2024\/11\/13\/divinity-school-library-pray-ban-suspend\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has a pray-in in solidarity<\/a>, that does a lot more for fostering community than say <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2024\/11\/harvard-triples-down-on-punishing-campus-free-speech-adds-prayer-to-no-no-list\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">punishing students and staff for studying silently or praying with a purpose<\/a>. Or, put differently:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Ryave, the president of HLS Tzedek, a group of pro-Palestine Jewish students, added that \u201cit is clear that Harvard is intimidated by our collective power and the ever-growing movement for a liberated Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>HLS Tzedek isn\u2019t the only student group that spoke on the referendum. The HLS Alliance for Israel had this to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The HLS Alliance for Israel, an officially recognized student group, criticized the referendum as \u201cplainly discriminatory, calling for divestment from companies that violate human rights, but then falsely pointing to and moreover singling out the Jewish state.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I do think they are correct to say that it is wrong to call for divestment and then single out Israel. This is, after all, a concerted effort. For example, what about the American companies that are contributing to the war effort? Thankfully, the folks over at American Friends Service Committee have already done a bang-up job of compiling <a href=\"https:\/\/afsc.org\/gaza-genocide-companies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">companies that are profiting from the genocide in Gaza<\/a>, and there are some big names like Boeing, Ford, and General Motors on the list \u2014 those are just <em>some<\/em> of the American companies. A thorough and coherent rationale for divestment should include, for example, American and German companies, depending on the school\u2019s portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you like the outcome of the vote or not, it was made possible by a democratic process and civic engagement.
