On top of these (likely unconstitutional) executive actions, Trump has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/trump-sics-eeoc-on-20-biglaw-firms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sicced the EEOC<\/a>\u00a0on 20 additional Biglaw firms over their DEI policies, with the agency launching full-scale investigations into their alleged \u201cunlawful\u201d employment practices.<\/p>\n<p>One of these legal elites, Paul Weiss, has already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/paul-weiss-grovels-to-trump-gets-out-from-under-executive-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">capitulated to Trump\u2019s demands<\/a>, kissing the presidential ring to escape the financial consequences of an executive order that could wreak havoc upon the firm. All the while, Biglaw leaders have remained silent, despite being faced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/hundreds-of-associates-sign-open-letter-calling-on-biglaw-leaders-to-defend-the-legal-profession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">with calls<\/a>\u00a0to<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/biglaws-silence-on-trumps-executive-orders-is-deafening-for-in-house-counsel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0stand up<\/a>\u00a0to the Trump administration and <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/a-third-year-skadden-associate-is-the-only-person-in-biglaw-willing-to-publicly-condemn-trumps-threat-to-the-rule-of-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">defend the rule of law<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Although Biglaw firms may not be willing to defend themselves for fear of facing Trump\u2019s wrath, they thankfully have outside support from <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/over-50-bar-organizations-stand-up-for-the-rule-of-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">more than 50 bar associations<\/a>, and now law school deans are taking up the cause.<\/p>\n<p>In a joint letter issued on March 26, nearly 80 law deans from schools across the country stepped forward to condemn the Trump administration\u2019s sanctions against Biglaw firms, being careful to note that they were expressing their own personal views, and not those of their institutions. Here\u2019s an excerpt from that letter (available in full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/william-treanor_today-i-joined-78-of-my-fellow-law-school-ugcPost-7310717627155271688-E2Co\/?utm_medium=ios_app&amp;rcm=ACoAAASzYsgB3EQfxwoQXJ1NoMopdLBouc6OLh0&amp;utm_source=social_share_send&amp;utm_campaign=mail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We write to reaffirm basic principles: The government should not punish lawyers and law firms for the clients they represent, absent specific findings that such representation was illegal or unethical. Punishing lawyers for their representation and advocacy violates the First Amendment and undermines the Sixth Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>We thus speak as legal educators, responsible for training the next generation of lawyers, in condemning any government efforts to punish lawyers or their firms based on the identity of their clients or for their zealous lawful and ethical advocacy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Several of the deans who signed the letter hail from the some of the most elite law schools in the nation, including Erwin Chemerinsky of UC Berkeley, Jens David Ohlin of Cornell, Michael Waterstone of UCLA, and William Treanor of Georgetown.
