And the reason was \u2026 <em>allll the reasons.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the past nine weeks, Ed Martin has consistently undermined the independence and abused the power of the U.S. Attorney\u2019s office in DC \u2013 openly threatening and intimidating political opponents, dismissing charges against his own clients, firing public servants for their roles in legitimate investigations, and using his office as a cudgel to chill dissent and free speech,\u201d Schiff said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schiff.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/statement-sen-schiff-announces-hold-on-d-c-u-s-attorney-nominee-ed-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">statement<\/a> announcing the hold.<\/p>\n<p>Martin, a former \u201cStop the Steal\u201d protester who never prosecuted a case before being tapped to lead the biggest prosecutors shop in the country, keeps inventing new ways to be bad at his job. Whether he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/georgetown-law-to-ed-martin-f-all-the-way-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">menacing<\/a> Georgetown University for doing THE DEI, or sending <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/02\/dc-prosecutor-ed-martin-isnt-a-nazi-he-just-really-likes-eagles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">harassing notes<\/a> to congressmen for <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/interim-dc-us-atty-ed-martin-harassing-rep-vindman-now-for-does-it-even-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">mean words<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/02\/turning-over-u-s-attorneys-office-to-conspiracy-theorist-working-out-as-expected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">vowing to protect<\/a> Elon Musk from unethical meanies, or getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2025\/02\/27\/trump-fbi-epa-grant-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">laughed out of the room<\/a> by a federal magistrate for trying to get a warrant without probable cause, he\u2019s a maverick of batshittery. <\/p>\n<p>In the past month, he came up with three novel ways to abuse his office!<\/p>\n<p>First, he\u2019s got a spiffy new plan to withhold police misconduct reports from courts. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My Letter to the Blue<\/p>\n<p>DEFEND THE POLICE <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ufYsNOEZAi\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/ufYsNOEZAi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 U.S. Attorney Ed Martin (@USAEdMartin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USAEdMartin\/status\/1898137374942691343?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March 7, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In a publicly posted letter to \u201cDear Blue,\u201d he announced that he is \u201crewriting our policy for our Lewis List\u201d to \u201cstand up in court against the \u2018public defender service\u2019 (PDS) and anyone who maligns our officers for sport or advantage unfairly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2025\/03\/25\/martin-trump-prosecutors-misconduct-violations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a>, this is a reference to the \u201c<em>Lewis<\/em> List\u201d of cops who are under investigation or have been found liable for misconduct. The list is functionally a \u201cDo Not Call\u201d list, since the misconduct or allegations must be disclosed for impeachment purposes under <em>Brady<\/em>, as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/cases\/district-of-columbia\/court-of-appeals\/1979\/12288.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">1979 DC Circuit ruling<\/a>. But Ed Martin seems to think that all that disclosure stuff is optional. (Or maybe he\u2019s never heard of it.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUSAO will no longer allow judges or others to gratuitously damage your careers because of the outsized impact of inexact characterizations,\u201d he blustered, ending with a promise to \u201cDEFEND THE POLICE.
