Today, Donald Trump signed a likely unconstitutional<\/a> Executive Order targeting <\/a>elite litigation firm Susman Godfrey. Similar to the other EOs<\/a> aimed at Biglaw, the order purports to strip Susman attorneys of access to federal buildings, amongst other provisions.<\/p>\n

But even more chilling than the EO itself were comments made during the signing. Trump revealed he\u2019s targeting \u201canother five\u201d firms. Deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller boasted about the deals that a number of Bigaw firms<\/a> have inked with the administration to get themselves out of the Trump doghouse. So far, the announced deals (from Paul Weiss<\/a>, Skadden<\/a>, Milbank<\/a>, and Willkie<\/a>) have included $340 million in pro bono payola. But Miller estimated the value at\u00a0$600 to $700 million, which sure seems to hint<\/a> that more firms are willing to bend the knee<\/a>. \u201cThe numbers are adding up. We\u2019re going to be close to a billion soon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

So\u2026 why has Susman caught the attention of Trump? Well, Miller said<\/a>, \u201cThis firm is very involved in the election misconduct.\u201d Which, is misleading at best. But Susman Godfrey represented <\/a>Dominion Voting Systems in its defamation case against Fox News, collecting a hefty contingency fee from the $787.5 million settlement that rocketed <\/a>the firm up the Biglaw rankings<\/a> by a variety of measures<\/a>. Plus Susman has been active<\/a> in the Perkins Coie case challenging the EO against that firm \u2014 they signed the law firm amicus brief and are repping the\u00a0bipartisan group<\/a> of former senior national security, foreign policy, intelligence, and other public officials that also filed an amicus.<\/p>\n
