Norton Rose Fulbright attorneys are being warned by firm leaders to mind their Ps and Qs when talking about Donald Trump. Due to \u201csensitivities surrounding this subject,\u201d whenever an attorney is writing anything related to Trump they have to get it cleared by the firm\u2019s editorial team, according to an internal memo addressed to the EMEA offices but shared with lawyers.<\/p>\n

As reported by<\/a> Law.com International:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe key point is that we publish and comment on legal, rather than political issues,\u201d the memo stated.<\/p>\n

The firm also told lawyers to avoid mentioning the Trump administration \u201cin any way other than factual.\u201d It said they should avoid sharing political opinion, stressing that the firm\u2019s voice \u201cmust remain neutral.\u201d When discussing tariffs or other policies of the administration, lawyers were told to stick to legal implications, potential impacts on clients, and ensure the commentary is balanced.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I guess that\u2019s prudent, given the petty retaliation<\/a> that\u2019s a hallmark of Trump\u2019s interactions with Biglaw.<\/a><\/p>\n

A firm spokesperson clarified, \u201cFor the avoidance of doubt, this guidance does not, of course, constrain our people from sharing their political views in their personal capacity.\u201d A distinction I\u2019m sure even Orwell could appreciate.<\/p>\n
