To say the legal industry is under an unprecedented attack right now<\/a> is almost a quaint understatement. Judges are being threatened with impeachment for doing their jobs<\/a>. Biglaw firms are being hit with likely unconstitutional executive orders<\/a> designed to extract a financial penalty for displeasing the president<\/a>. And the federal government has taken to treating Supreme Court decisions<\/a> as advisory at best<\/a>. It ain\u2019t pretty out there for lawyers.<\/p>\n

So there\u2019s some organizing to be done. On May 1st, Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) and a wide variety of organizations<\/a> are sponsoring a National Law Day of Action.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n

The principles of judicial independence and the independence of the legal profession \u2013 cornerstones of American democracy \u2013 are facing unprecedented challenges across the country. Attacks on judges for unpopular rulings, political pressure on legal professionals, and a growing distrust of the legal system threaten the very foundation of fairness and equal justice.<\/p>\n

These aren\u2019t abstract legal concepts. They directly impact every citizen\u2019s ability to have their rights protected and their voices heard. When the rule of law is weakened, our entire nation suffers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Events are being held around the country. In New York City, the\u00a0rally is sponsored by the New York City Bar Association, the New York County Lawyers Association, the New York Council of Defense Lawyers, and the New York Civil Liberties Union, and will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Foley Square in lower Manhattan.
