And though the surrendering firms <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/05\/biglaw-firms-surrendering-to-trump-furiously-backpedaling-lol-what-pro-bono-deals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">try to downplay the terms<\/a> of the deals, Trump keeps<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/biglaw-firms-in-league-with-donald-trump-now-have-to-defend-cops-that-kill-black-and-brown-people\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> turning the screws <\/a>making it worse and worse. Just<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/pray-i-dont-alter-it-any-further-what-darth-vader-should-teach-law-firms-about-settling-with-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> like Darth Vader. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s also tough out there for the sorts of public interest causes \u2014 civil rights, voting rights, immigration, reproductive freedom \u2014 that *actually* need the pro bono services of Biglaw firms. A senior Biglaw partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/07\/politics\/trump-law-firm-crackdown-pro-bono-work\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told CNN\u2019s Katelyn Polantz<\/a>, \u201cI know from talking to organizations, they are having a hell of a time finding firms to partner with. Firms are really gun shy to take on cases that may upset the administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentiment was echoed by Juan Proa\u00f1o, the CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) \u2014 the largest Hispanic and Latin-American civil rights organization in the country, \u201cThe sea has parted. There are some firms that are much more reserved about their engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LULAC knows from firsthand experience. The organization has partnered with Paul, Weiss on many pro bono matters, but when PW struck a deal with Trump, all that was thrown into question. Before the deal was announced, PW called LULAC and withdrew from a matter the firm had been working on.
