The first is Mahmoud Khalil. He was detained related to protests he took part in on Columbia\u2019s campus. Shortly after being taken into custody, he was transferred from New Jersey to Louisiana. Besides the general hardship of being abducted for having the gall to believe in the First Amendment, he suffered the injury of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/21\/us\/mahmoud-khalil-denied-ice-release-son-birth\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">being denied the chance to see his son being born<\/a>. His case is still live \u2014 a judge recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/trump-doj-must-defend-legal-basis-for-deporting-mahmoud-khalil-judge\/ar-AA1Em8TV\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ordered the DOJ to offer a legal basis for Khalil\u2019s detainment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The second protestor is R\u00fcmeysa \u00d6zt\u00fcrk. She is a Tufts University graduate student who was abducted by plain clothes ICE officers in broad daylight over a paper she wrote voicing her political opinions. Thankfully, the judiciary is acting as a check on executive excesses. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/05\/07\/g-s1-64726\/federal-court-rules-student-rumeysa-ozturk-detention-vermont-challenge\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NPR<\/a> has coverage:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A federal appeals court in New York Wednesday ordered the Trump administration to transfer R\u00fcmeysa \u00d6zt\u00fcrk, a Tufts University doctoral student, from Louisiana to Vermont to continue her immigration detention in that state while a judge there decides whether to release her on bail.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has one week to comply with the transfer, a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclum.org\/sites\/default\/files\/field_documents\/2025-05-07-105954.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ruled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Would you look at that! While a deadline of months ago would have been preferred, the week to comply at least acts as a concrete measuring stick to know if the administration is acting in contempt of court or not. The 2nd Circuit must have learned their lesson after seeing how the administration squabbled over definitions and <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/doj-makes-up-fake-supreme-court-quote-about-deportation-hoping-no-one-notices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">may have AI hallucinated a justification for not actually facilitating Abrego Garcia\u2019s return from an El Salvadorian slave camp<\/a>. Things may have played out a little differently if the Supreme Court explicitly said \u201cBring Garcia\u2019s ass back within 7 business days.\u201d They would have also played out differently had the transfer not been granted \u2014 being in Louisiana would have put her squarely in the hands of the 5th Circuit and that wouldn\u2019t have boded well.
