This morning, President Trump dumped Ed Martin, his first choice to lead the US Attorney\u2019s Office in DC. Looks like Ed is resigning to spend more time with his unhinged correspondence.<\/p>\n

Look out, Jewish delis! Your illegal DEI \u201cBlack and White\u201d cookies are next!<\/p>\n

Martin\u2019s tenure leading the largest US Attorney\u2019s Office in the country was marked by just the kind of bad publicity that gets in the way of carrying out the administration\u2019s agenda. He pumped out bombastic threats to Georgetown Law, Senator Chuck Schumer<\/a>, Wikipedia<\/a>, the New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>, and medical marijuana vendors<\/a>. He supported Nazis<\/a>. He forgot to mention that he\u2019d appeared more than 150 times on Kremlin propaganda TV<\/a>. He dismissed a case against his own client<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In fairness, that\u2019s only because he was wildly unqualified for the job.<\/p>\n

Martin appears never to have tried a case, and instead made his bones in conservative politics, where, as chief of staff to Missouri Governor Matt Blunt, his flouting of the state\u2019s sunshine laws cost the state $1.8 million<\/a> in legal fees and payouts. From then it was on to a stint at Phyllis Schlafly\u2019s \u201cEagle Forum,\u201d which he broke<\/a>. But his unwavering support for President Trump, including in his efforts to steal the 2020 election, were all the qualifications he needed. And even after this debacle, the president seems not to have soured on him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to say Ed is unbelievable. And hopefully we can bring him in too, whether it\u2019s DOJ or whatever, in some capacity,\u201d Trump rambled vaguely this morning during an Oval Office presser where he explained that slowdowns at US ports are terrific because \u201cthat means we lose less money\u201d and repeated the claim that \u201cSenator Schumer has become a Palestinian.\u201d<\/p>\n

In reality, it wasn\u2019t Chuck Schumer who doomed Martin. It was Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who said Tuesday that he was going to vote against him, ensuring that the nominee didn\u2019t make it out of the Judiciary Committee. <\/p>\n

In typical fashion, Tillis emphasized that, under normal circumstances, he\u2019d gladly vote for whatever unqualified clown the White House put forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Mr. Martin were being put forth as a U.S. Attorney for any district except the district where Jan. 6 happened, the protest happened, I\u2019d probably support him,\u201d he told the Washington Post<\/a>. But he simply couldn\u2019t bring himself to put a Stop the Steal protestor in charge of the office that prosecuted the Capitol Riot cases: \u201cWe have to be very, very clear that what happened on January the 6th was wrong. It was not prompted or created by other people to put those people in trouble. They made a stupid decision, and they disgraced the United States by absolutely destroying the Capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thanks to Martin\u2019s constant antics, support for his nomination in the caucus was muted. And so they effectively pocket-vetoed it, never bringing it to a vote in the Judiciary Committee. Interim nominees can only sit for 120 days, which meant it was up or out for Martin by May 20. With no vote scheduled next week, the nomination was effectively dead, and Trump wasn\u2019t willing to expend the energy to revive it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can only lift that little phone so many times in a day,\u201d he conceded.<\/p>\n
