He pumped out bombastic threats to Georgetown Law, <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/02\/dc-prosecutor-ed-martin-isnt-a-nazi-he-just-really-likes-eagles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Senator Chuck Schumer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/dc-prosecutor-ed-martin-goes-after-wikipedia-for-exercising-first-amendment-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Wikipedia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2025\/05\/02\/medical-journals-hit-with-threatening-letters-from-justice-department\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/05\/02\/legal-washington-dc-cannabis-ed-martin-00323255\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">medical marijuana vendors<\/a>. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/05\/01\/nx-s1-5380933\/ed-martin-trump-hale-cusanelli-antisemitic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">supported Nazis<\/a>. He forgot to mention that he\u2019d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2025\/04\/16\/ed-martin-rt-sputnik-usattorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">appeared more than 150 times on Kremlin propaganda TV<\/a>. He <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/02\/u-s-attorney-ed-martin-blows-past-another-ethical-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">dismissed a case against his own client<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In fairness, that\u2019s only because he was wildly unqualified for the job.<\/p>\n<p>Martin appears never to have tried a case, and instead made his bones in conservative politics, where, as chief of staff to Missouri Governor Matt Blunt, his flouting of the state\u2019s sunshine laws <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090529043740\/http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/news\/stories.nsf\/missouristatenews\/story\/5D339DBE59A5C591862575BF000DCAFB?OpenDocument\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cost the state $1.8 million<\/a> in legal fees and payouts. From then it was on to a stint at Phyllis Schlafly\u2019s \u201cEagle Forum,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlpr.org\/government-politics-issues\/2017-01-02\/battle-over-phyllis-schlaflys-legacy-intensifies-with-her-children-at-the-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">which he broke<\/a>. But his unwavering support for President Trump, including in his efforts to steal the 2020 election, were all the qualifications he needed. And even after this debacle, the president seems not to have soured on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to say Ed is unbelievable. And hopefully we can bring him in too, whether it\u2019s DOJ or whatever, in some capacity,\u201d Trump rambled vaguely this morning during an Oval Office presser where he explained that slowdowns at US ports are terrific because \u201cthat means we lose less money\u201d and repeated the claim that \u201cSenator Schumer has become a Palestinian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reality, it wasn\u2019t Chuck Schumer who doomed Martin. It was Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who said Tuesday that he was going to vote against him, ensuring that the nominee didn\u2019t make it out of the Judiciary Committee. <\/p>\n<p>In typical fashion, Tillis emphasized that, under normal circumstances, he\u2019d gladly vote for whatever unqualified clown the White House put forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mr. Martin were being put forth as a U.S. Attorney for any district except the district where Jan. 6 happened, the protest happened, I\u2019d probably support him,\u201d he told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2025\/05\/06\/ed-martin-senate-republican-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Washington Post<\/a>. They made a stupid decision, and they disgraced the United States by absolutely destroying the Capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Martin\u2019s constant antics, support for his nomination in the caucus was muted. And so they effectively pocket-vetoed it, never bringing it to a vote in the Judiciary Committee. Interim nominees can only sit for 120 days, which meant it was up or out for Martin by May 20.
