Less than two weeks after it was created, it boasts over 500 members. The group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/ericwhitaker_gcu-gcu-activity-7325569313485004800-xOLG?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAFjsVeMBxZfAGKt8PPZ_V7BwrseBWOPP5ys\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">purportedly nonpartisan<\/a> goal is to \u201cto share information, resources, and strategies on how to support the rule of law and the independence of the legal profession,\u201d but, more specifically to stand against the \u201cexecutive branch attacks on lawyers and law firms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Led by Eric Whitaker, a former Tesla general counsel who is now chief legal officer of 10x Genomics, and Shirin Keen, a former general counsel of UnitedMasters, the organization is deeply concerned about <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/05\/biglaw-firms-fighting-trump-keep-winning-capitulators-keep-losing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the nine Biglaw firms that have capitulated to Donald Trump<\/a>, inking deals with the administration promising $940 million<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/05\/biglaws-trump-deals-have-chilling-effect-on-pro-bono\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> in pro bono payola<\/a> (plus the <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/trump-is-coming-for-biglaw-heres-what-the-firms-are-doing-about-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">many, many more that have stayed silent<\/a> in the face of the attacks on the rule of law). General Counsels United <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1TFJFmnO_LIVN1sK8lsuG48oNjZ919c3BeA8rT1D6YoQ\/edit?tab=t.0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in their mission statement:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Despite our many perspectives, we agree on one critical issue: Executive Branch attacks on lawyers and law firms \u2013 and these firms\u2019 silence or acquiescence \u2013 undermines our confidence in effective representation for our companies under the rule of law. We can no longer trust that law firms will put their professional ethics and their clients\u2019 long-term interests first over political influence, fear of retribution, and their own short-term interests. In order to innovate, our businesses rely on unbiased legal counsel to navigate regulatory environments and even to take positions adverse to the government, all free from political influence. When leading firms fail to unite in defending their own profession, we question how zealously they will advocate for us.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The creation of General Counsels United is analogous to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.com\/americanlawyer\/2025\/04\/25\/more-than-700-law-firm-partners-point-to-chilling-effects-after-trump-eos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent\u00a0launch <\/a>of Law Firm Partners United, a group of 700+ Biglaw partners, the latter of which filed an <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.alm.com\/fc\/01\/516eefb141e2b9cbe7229ce806c7\/partners-united-amicus.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">amicus brief <\/a>in support of Perkins Coie in their <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/05\/its-official-executive-order-targeting-perkins-coie-is-unconstitutional\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">successful challenge to Donald Trump\u2019s Executive Order<\/a> targeting the firm.
