The fascism is real, y\u2019all. Current New York City Comptroller and candidate for mayor Brad Lander was arrested by masked<\/a> federal ICE agents as he exited an immigration courtroom. There\u2019s video of the incident, and it\u2019s deeply chilling, particularly in a so-called democracy.<\/p>\n

NYC Comptroller Brad Lander was just arrested by Trump\u2019s ICE agents because he asked to see a judicial warrant. This is fascism and all New Yorkers must speak in one voice. Release him now.<\/p>\n

Lander can be heard in the video saying, \u201cI\u2019m not obstructing \u2013 I\u2019m standing right here in the hallway, I asked to see the judicial warrant. You don\u2019t have authority to arrest a U.S. citizen asking for a judicial warrant.\u201d Getting arrested for asking questions is a disturbing new trend<\/a> for the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

In the midst of promises of \u201cmass deportations\u201d from the administration where ICE is targeting immigration courts for arrests, Lander spent the morning observing immigration court hearings and told the AP<\/a> he was accompanying immigrants out of the building. That\u2019s when Lander was detained by federal agents.<\/p>\n

At a press conference following the arrest, Lander\u2019s wife, Meg Barnette, said her husband had tried to link arms with a man following his immigration court hearing when \u201cwe were swarmed by a number of federal agents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018You\u2019re obstructing,\u2019\u201d Barnette said. \u201cI was shoved out of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I saw was shocking and unacceptable,\u201d she added. \u201cWhat I saw today was not the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She continued, \u201cThis is a place where the rule of law is supposed to work. I was able to call our attorney and retain him immediately for Brad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we have the connections and the means to do so. Nobody else in those courtrooms has that. I am confident that Brad\u2019s going to be out soon \u2026 This is just one more example of Brad\u2019s values in actions. He doesn\u2019t just talk the talk. He walks the walk. He cares about what happens to people.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Mamdani, several of Lander\u2019s opponents in the mayoral contest wasted little time condemning the federal agents for the arrest.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s ICE cowboy gestapo isn\u2019t about public safety it\u2019s about authoritarianism. It shreds the rule of law, ignores due process, and targets people based on fear and hate.
