Sullivan & Cromwell co-chair Bob Giuffra is working his way up<\/a> the MAGA hierarchy. Yesterday, he was spotted by Business Insider\u2019s Jacob Shamsian<\/a> at the Second Circuit argument in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case where the president\u2019s lawyers were arguing that presidential immunity should invalidate the $83.3 million jury verdict against their client for defamation. At the argument, Giuffra was seen with Boris Epshteyn<\/a>, the controversial personal attorney of Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Now Giuffra *does* represent the president \u2014 Sullivan & Cromwell is handling<\/a> Trump\u2019s appeal of his hush money conviction. Though that is\u2026 not this case.<\/p>\n

This left a lot of observers wondering: what the hell was Giuffra doing there?<\/p>\n

Not a good look for a co-chair of the preeminent New York law firm Sullivan & Cromwell LLP to be hanging with the likes of Boris Epshteyn, let alone while cheering on the appeal of their adjudicated-digital-rapist client in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case. <\/p>\n

Giuffra had no good reason to be at the argument of the Carroll appeal, which has no substantial relationship to be criminal appeal he’s handling, \u2026 other than to further taint himself and his firm.<\/p>\n

Giuffra\u2019s time is very valuable \u2014 down to the 6 minute interval \u2014 so he\u2019s getting *something* out of the appearance. Some useful networking perhaps? It\u2019s not that he needs to hear the argument, yes presidential immunity is also an issue in Giuffra\u2019s case, but the oral arguments are available online<\/a>. If \u201ckeeping abreast of developments in presidential immunity jurisprudence\u201d was all Giuffra cared about, he could tune in online and save himself the travel time (on one of the hottest days of the year, no less).<\/p>\n

But I have to wonder just how this schmoozing is going down at S&C. There was a lot of internal turmoil<\/a> when Giuffra announced the representation. Representing an adjudicated sex pest, with a history of dictating a brash (and not very S&C-like) litigation strategy (and then stiffing his lawyers to boot!) had a real way of draining morale. The everyone-deserves-a-criminal-defense argument wears pretty thin when Giuffra is showing up for funsies in a civil case where the judge had to repeatedly clarify<\/a> that the trial \u201cconclusively establish[ed] that Mr. Trump did, forcibly and without her consent, penetrate Ms. Carroll\u2019s vagina with his fingers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unsavory for a White Shoe firm doesn\u2019t even begin to cover it.<\/p>\n
