President Donald Trump doesn\u2019t like anyone asking too many questions about the Iran strikes he unilaterally authorized. In fact, when news outlets report that the bombings were not as destructive as Trump initially boasted, he (and other members of his administration<\/a>) lashed out at members of the media. On Truth Social, he called out<\/a> journalists from CNN and the New York Times as \u201cfake news reporters\u201d who are \u201cbad people with evil intentions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But that wasn\u2019t the end of Trump\u2019s tantrum. His personal attorney Alejandro Brito sent letters to the NYT <\/a>and CNN<\/a>, full of legal bluster. The missives demand they \u201cretract and apologize\u201d the reporting for \u201cfalse,\u201d \u201cdefamatory,\u201d and \u201cunpatriotic\u201d reporting, First Amendment be damned!<\/p>\n

The Fourth Estate is more functional than Biglaw<\/a>, so in the face of these threats, the outlets responded with stinging rebukes.<\/p>\n

David McCraw,\u00a0the lawyer for the Times replied<\/a>, \u201cNo retraction is needed.\u201d He continued, \u201cNo apology will be forthcoming. We told the truth to the best of our ability. We will continue to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n

And CNN\u2019s statement was a bit less forceful, but still defended their reporting.<\/p>\n

\u201cCNN\u2019s reporting made clear that this was an initial finding that could change with additional intelligence. We have extensively covered President Trump\u2019s own deep skepticism about it,\u201d said CNN\u2019s statement. \u201cHowever, we do not believe it is reasonable to criticize CNN reporters for accurately reporting the existence of the assessment and accurately characterizing its findings, which are in the public interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least someone is still defending the Constitution.<\/p>\n
