Esseks, A&amp;O Shearman\u2019s co-head of investigations &amp; white-collar, will join Ingoglia in a new litigation outfit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esseksingoglia.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Essecks Ingoglia<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>As the American Lawyer notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Esseks and Ingoglia are the latest partners to leave A&amp;O Shearman, which has experienced fairly consistent departures since the firm\u2019s merger took effect in May 2024. Many, but not all, of these are likely to be connected to the firm\u2019s plans, reported on by Law.com in September 2024, to cut 10% of its equity partnership.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah, that\u2019s one theory.<\/p>\n<p>The merger of Allen &amp; Overy and Shearman &amp; Sterling brought a lot of collateral damage, with a promised <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2024\/09\/ten-percent-of-equity-partnership-being-cut-at-ao-shearman\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10 percent cut to the equity partner ranks<\/a> and some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abajournal.com\/news\/article\/59-partners-leave-ao-shearman-outside-asia-since-decision-to-trim-10-of-equity-partnership?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">59 partners departing since then<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s been cooking since late last year and the firm\u2019s <em>co-head of white-collar<\/em> probably wasn\u2019t on the chopping block. If only something much more recently transpired that might convince attorneys to cut ties with the firm\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Like, <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/five-top-biglaw-firms-pledge-their-allegiance-to-trump-promising-to-provide-legal-services-beyond-his-time-in-the-white-house\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">committing $125 million in pro bono legal services to the Trump administration<\/a> amid <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/associates-beg-ao-shearman-not-to-be-the-next-collaborator\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">outright revolt from rank-and-file attorneys<\/a> who put together an open letter with hundreds of signatures begging firm leadership not to cave. <em>[Ed. Note: A total of 9 firms signed those deals\u2026 hence the headline]<\/em> Lawyers, particularly litigators with practices based on constantly opposing the federal government, face serious obstacles living under a deal that the White House certainly believes commits them to <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/biglaw-firms-in-league-with-donald-trump-now-have-to-defend-cops-that-kill-black-and-brown-people\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">volunteer their services directly to the administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not like we haven\u2019t already seen this play out elsewhere. Paul Weiss suffered a huge litigation loss when many of its high-profile litigators <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/05\/paul-weiss-rainmakers-bolt-to-start-new-firm-free-of-trump-deal-restrictions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulled up stakes to form Dunn Isaacson Rhee<\/a>. That boutique also snagged talent from another Trump collaborator when <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/07\/new-elite-boutique-law-firm-picks-up-more-talent-from-biglaw-cowards\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meryl Governski left Willkie Farr<\/a>. Coincidentally, while we\u2019ve been writing about Dunn Isaacson Rhee for a while now, the firm\u2019s official launch date is\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dirllp.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not even \u2014 necessarily \u2014 political. If your business is based on defending your clients against the federal government, you can\u2019t really get the job done if clients think your firm owes the government favors under the table and you definitely can\u2019t when the government THINKS SO TOO.<\/p>\n<p>Transactional clients might enjoy knowing their lawyers have a cozy relationship with regulators, but litigation requires the freedom to tell the DOJ to pound sand.
