At the time, the company had just closed a [\u2026]<\/p>\n<p>In February 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnext.com\/2024\/02\/ross-cofounder-returns-to-legal-tech-with-startup-using-ai-to-surface-judges-decision-making-patterns.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I wrote here about the launch<\/a> of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/benchiq.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bench IQ<\/a>, a company that is using generative AI to provide comprehensive insights into the decision-making patterns of judges \u2014 based not just on their written rulings, but also their rulings from the bench and other data.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the company had just closed a $2.1 million pre-seed round, and now comes news that it has raised a $5.3 million seed round and landed four of the top five Am Law 100 firms as customers.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the company\u2019s CEO and cofounder is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jimohovb\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jimoh Ovbiagele<\/a>, who as a 21-year-old in 2014 cofounded ROSS Intelligence, an early entrant in AI legal research that shut down after it was s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnext.com\/category\/thomson-reuters-v-ross\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ued by Thomson Reuters<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ovbiagele founded the company together with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jeffrey-w-gettleman-354b4bb\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Gettleman<\/a>, a former partner at Kirkland &amp; Ellis, who came up with the idea, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/maxim-isakov-8486218b\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maxim Isakov<\/a>, who had been founding engineer at ROSS and is now Bench IQ\u2019s chief technology officer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>(Pictured above are Gettleman, Isakov and Ovbiagele.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What makes the company unique is its approach to providing intelligence into judges\u2019 decision-making patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Using a proprietary dataset, it uses large language models and AI agents to identify patterns in judges\u2019 reasoning and provide insights litigators can use in litigation strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, it does this based not just on their written rulings, but also on their oral rulings from the bench and other indicators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to solve a longstanding problem in the legal field, and that is that judges only write judicial opinions for 3% of rulings,\u201d Ovbiagele told me in February 2024, when I first wrote about the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo often when attorneys are writing court documents or preparing for oral arguments and they want to know what their judge thinks about different issues in their case, they have very little information to go off of. That\u2019s the problem that we are solving with Bench IQ.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gettleman, speaking about today\u2019s announcement, said: \u201cThe judge is the single most important stakeholder in any legal proceeding. When billions are on the line, every nuance in judicial philosophy matters.
