A seasoned and respected emergency room physician, a dynamic public speaker, a frequent expert on national news broadcasts, and even a seven-season competitor on \u201cAmerican Ninja Warrior,\u201d Kaufman\u2019s professional path has been anything but typical. But while his resume spans a wide range of skills and disciplines, his work as an expert witness has emerged as one of the most impactful\u2014and personally rewarding\u2014chapters of his multifaceted career.<\/p>\n<p>His career has spanned from California where he was a partner at Tahoe Emergency Physicians for many years to UCHealth in Colorado where Kaufman treated thousands of patients in crisis. He thrives in fast-paced, high-stakes environments and brings the same clear-headed decisiveness to the courtroom. His journey into expert witness work, however, was less about a career pivot and more about an organic evolution that merged his lifelong passions for both medicine and law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been fascinated by both,\u201d Kaufman says. \u201cMy first interest in medicine started with a Fisher Price doctor\u2019s kit when I was a little boy. I was captivated early on. But I also loved legal dramas like \u2018L.A. Law\u2019 and later \u2018Suits,\u2019 even if they were a bit over-the-top. With two strong women in my life who are attorneys\u2014my mother and my life partner\u2014I was always exposed to the law in a meaningful way. At one point, I even considered going to law school myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was this dual curiosity that eventually led Kaufman to found Kaufman Medical Group, a consulting firm that began as an educational platform for new physicians but quickly blossomed into a sought-after resource for attorneys in need of medical expert analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon completing my residency, I noticed how differently residents approached the transition to becoming an attending physician. There wasn\u2019t a lot of guidance out there,\u201d he explains. \u201cI started engaging with people online, offering advice and speaking about it. Kaufman Medical Group now offers attorneys a complimentary 20-minute case consultation, followed by a detailed strategy session or written proposal outlining the case analysis and retainer information. Kaufman\u2019s services are in high demand, by both plaintiff and defense attorneys, because of his reputation for rigor, clarity and impartiality. \u201cI love giving second opinions to attorneys who may already have an expert and want to cover their bases\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a duty to the court to be completely objective,\u201d Kaufman emphasizes. \u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019ll turn down cases if I don\u2019t believe in the merits on either side. Some expert witnesses seem to make it their job to find or even manufacture an argument regardless of the strength of the case. I think that\u2019s unethical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his view, expert witness work should serve both the legal system and the attorneys navigating it. \u201cA big part of our work at Kaufman Medical Group is helping lawyers become educated on medical standards so they can avoid gray areas or poorly supported arguments that only serve to drag a case out unnecessarily,\u201d he says. \u201cIt saves everyone time, effort, and often, disappointment.\u201d Frequently, Dr. Kaufman will spend time\u2014off the clock\u2014to help educate a family or client of an attorney if he cannot support their claim.<\/p>\n<p>Kaufman\u2019s first foray into expert witness work is a story he remembers vividly. \u201cI don\u2019t recall who made the very first call, but I do remember being asked to evaluate injuries in a domestic abuse case,\u201d he says. \u201cThey wanted to know if what I saw in the ER matched the reported altercation. At the time, I didn\u2019t even know which side had retained me. It just struck me that despite not being forensically trained, I had the clinical knowledge to answer that question. But beyond that, you need likability, relatability, strong communication skills, and the ability to write and speak clearly. You\u2019re essentially laying out an argument about prospective reasonable care\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>Those qualities have earned Kaufman a reputation not just as a credible expert, but as a partner in legal strategy. \u201cI\u2019d say that 90% of experts form their opinion and don\u2019t think much beyond that. What distinguishes my work, and Kaufman Medical Group more broadly, is that I help attorneys think through definitions, lines of reasoning, questions to ask. I\u2019m extremely responsive; people can text me anytime. As an ER doctor, I\u2019m used to juggling a lot at once, and I like to keep my to-do list clean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaufman\u2019s dedication to his clients\u2019 needs is matched by his commitment to staying grounded in ethics and professional integrity. In his debut appearance on Season 5, he famously reduced a fellow contestant\u2019s dislocated shoulder on television before sailing through the obstacle course with ease.<\/p>\n<p>That moment, equal parts drama and sportsmanship, encapsulated the spirit of Noah Kaufman\u2014calm under pressure, equipped for the unexpected, and always ready to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a wild ride,\u201d he says with a laugh. \u201cI think that drive to take on challenges, whether it\u2019s in the ER, in court or on a Ninja Warrior course, comes from the same place. And I love pushing myself to do more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he\u2019s not in the ER, teaching, lecturing or appearing as an expert witness, Kaufman enjoys nothing more than spending time with family and his life-long passion, rock climbing. The family enjoys any time they escape the hubbub of the city and seek solace and recreation at their cabin in Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>As evidenced by his performance on \u201cAmerican Ninja Warrior,\u201d the 50-year-old maintains a healthy lifestyle eating well and working out.<\/p>\n<p>His more sedentary interests include writing, thinking, reading, and speaking with attorneys. He\u2019s also in the midst of completing his first book entitled, \u201cThe Ethical Expert Witness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in a very fortunate position because as much as I love medicine and enjoy my work as an expert witness, at this point in my life I don\u2019t have to do either.
