Woodruff, MD, board certified pediatric neurologist and assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>Woodruff has been in practice for 20 years, 15 of them reviewing cases as an expert witness. He has been to trial 25 times and has been deposed more than 200 times. His opinions are fairly evenly balanced between plaintiff and defense cases. He is most often retained to review cases in which children are affected by hypoxic brain injury secondary to a lack of oxygen and traumatic brain injuries from a fall, a motor vehicle accident, or some other trauma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s certainly a shortage of pediatric neurologists willing and able to review cases. It is certainly something that is needed and it\u2019s something I enjoy doing,\u201d he says. He cites a 2018 case in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which involved a boy who was delivered with a brachial plexus injury, an injury to the nerves in his arm. The baby also had a hypoxic brain injury due to getting stuck in the birth canal. Woodruff was called to review the case for the plaintiff.<\/p>\n<p>The child suffered serious brain injury, but the legal team had to overcome a significant challenge \u2013 the MRI did not show a lot of brain injury.\u00a0 Yet through examination of the birth history and psychological testing, the attorneys succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>Woodruff says, \u201cWe were well prepared in that case. Next to honesty, preparation is the most important part about being an expert. To be successful you have to be prepared. You need to know what is in those records and everything very, very well, and you need to spend the time to understand the case like you would if you were taking a test in medical school.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4f4e6050 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4f4e6050\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings='\"background_background\":\"classic\"'>\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1bd49bd5\" data-id=\"1bd49bd5\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-15fc59a7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"15fc59a7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Driving a Bulldozer<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5393710f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5393710f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>He was born in Flint, Michigan and was raised in a suburb within a blue-collar, big union-supporting family. \u201cWe lived in a trailer park, but we called it a mobile home park because it sounded fancier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His family believed in working hard, working long and doing the best at what you do. \u201cI learned early that you may not be the smartest person in the room, but you can certainly be the hardest working person in the room and thereby outwork everybody else and come out on top.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woodruff earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed two different residencies \u2013 one was in pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin and one in pediatric neurology at the University of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>The disciplines learned in higher education are invaluable in his work as an expert witness. He is frequently complimented on his responsiveness, attention to detail, and his ability to be ahead of schedule. \u201cI work hard to be super easy to work with, with scheduling meetings, depositions, trials, following up and things like that. I like to think my family upbringing and my Midwest values contribute to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A strong work ethic was essential as his family could not afford the costs of a university education. He worked to put himself through school, as a handyman doing maintenance work at the student health clinic. And, by serving as a resident assistant in the dorms, he was able to get free room and board.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, Woodruff wanted to become a physical therapist. His choice of professions changed due to an interesting encounter with one of his biology professors. While discussing that career choice, the professor asked if he wanted to be the professional who took the order or the professional who writes the order. \u201cHe said I had what it takes to become a good doctor. That stuck with me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting through medical school and residency was like driving a bulldozer. You just have to push your way through,\u201d he says. He and his fellow med students worked 60-100 hours a week. He credits his wife as his strength during that time. A child had incurred a head injury and serious medical expertise was required. Woodruff took on the case and discovered he enjoyed the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that time, I knew nothing about how to do it. I worked to learn more about what it\u2019s like to be an expert witness, what they do, and how the process works. Things developed naturally from then on,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Woodruff offers a lot of sound advice for anyone in the medical field who has a desire to become an expert witness. Chief among them is to find a niche. \u201cFind something that you really are an expert in and have the education, training, and experience to be able to educate the attorneys, the judge, the jury in a case. One of your primary challenges is the need to educate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Being an expert witness requires the expert to essentially run two entirely different, although related businesses. The owner must be well-organized and have a system in place that supports each business.<\/p>\n<p>Having the available time and the willingness to dedicate that time to the challenges of being an expert witness is also crucial. An expert witness needs some flexibility in his or her schedule because trials are conducted during regular eight-to-five business hours. \u201cThis can\u2019t be a one-off thing. Attorneys need someone they can depend on not only to be there, but to be there fully prepared 100% of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woodruff also advises developing a thick skin and avoid taking an attack by an opposing attorney personally. \u201cThey\u2019ll attack your credentials. They\u2019ll attack your preparation. They may attack you personally because they\u2019re trying to get you back on your heels and to get you to second-guess yourself. Remember, that\u2019s just their job as an advocate for their client. He and his brother, who he calls \u201cthe tech guy,\u201d are creating The Expert Witness Playbook, a podcast that will begin later this summer. The podcast will focus on interviews with technical experts in various areas relating to working as an expert witness, such as how to organize records, how to store records, how to work with PDFs, how to review radiology on your computer, how to invoice, how to potentially set up a business as a legal entity and other non-medical aspects relating to the challenges expert witnesses face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be sort of the podcast where I\u2019m the learner and we\u2019re going to bring in technical experts so that the viewers can learn right along with me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Woodruff also writes the playbook for a life balanced between work and family. He and his wife of 26 years, Amy, have three children and he devotes a lot of time to his family. He and his wife enjoy traveling. He does a lot of cooking for his family and has taken numerous cooking classes during his travels.
