Carlos Portugal Gouv\u00eaa<\/a>, a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, was arrested<\/a> last week following a shooting incident<\/a> in front of Temple Beth Zion on Yom Kippur. Gouv\u00eaa was charged with illegally discharging a pellet gun, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and malicious damage of personal property. <\/p>\n

Security for the Temple called the police reporting a man with a gun, after the shooting which occurred their Kol Nidre service. There was damage to a nearby car that police believe is from Gouv\u00eaa\u2019s pellet gun. According to the Temple\u2019s statement<\/a>, no one was injured in the shooting and they \u201chave no reason to believe this was an anti-Semitic event.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gouv\u00eaa told authorities he used the pellet gun to \u201chunt rats in the area.\u201d Following his arraignment, Gouv\u00eaa was released on his recognizance. <\/p>\n

Harvard Law placed Gouv\u00eaa on \u201cadministrative leave as the school seeks to learn more about this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gouv\u00eaa himself graduated from HLS in 2008 and is an associate professor at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo Law School\u00a0and the CEO of the Global Law Institute. His courses this semester at Harvard include Corruption and Inequality Seminar: Unraveling the Vicious Circle, and Sustainable Capitalism.<\/p>\n

Gouv\u00eaa is due back in court for a pretrial hearing November 6th.<\/p>\n
