And Biglaw has proven\u2026 it is<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/elite-litigation-law-firm-comes-out-swinging-against-donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> not up to the task<\/a>. When <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/trump-is-coming-for-biglaw-heres-what-the-firms-are-doing-about-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">directly confronted\u00a0<\/a>with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/05\/its-official-executive-order-targeting-perkins-coie-is-unconstitutional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">unconstitutional\u00a0<\/a>Executive Orders targeting firms on Trump\u2019s list for retribution, more than twice as many major law firms were willing to promise the president nearly a billion dollars in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/tag\/pro-bono-payola\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">pro bono payola<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/biglaw-firms-in-league-with-donald-trump-now-have-to-defend-cops-that-kill-black-and-brown-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">conservative causes or clients<\/a>\u00a0as were willing to fight the EOs in court. Not a great look for the supposed best in the legal industry.<\/p>\n<p>But, that doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re completely screwed as a society. Small law and boutiques<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/09\/wanna-join-the-legal-fight-against-the-trump-administration-best-break-up-with-biglaw\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> have stepped up<\/a>, and these small but mighty firms are poised to take on some of the biggest cases. And that includes the Washington Litigation Group, a nonprofit firm created earlier this year. As\u00a0Nathaniel Zelinsky, senior counsel at the Washington Litigation Group, said, \u201cEvery day, we have incoming requests of people who need representation, and we can take on some, and we try to identify the ones that fit within our core mission\u2026but there is an extraordinary need right now for qualified representation and to make sure that we\u2019re putting forward the best representation in the most important cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take on cases that are sort of core to the rule of law. So we defend individuals, institutions who are under attack, and we combat government overreach, but we are at our core lawyers,\u201d said Zelinsky. \u201cOur pedigree is really people from [the] government and people in private practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The firm was created by a mix a Biglaw partners, former judges, and government attorneys. It recently added Kyle Freeny, a Greenberg Traurig partner who previously worked on Special Counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s team \u2014 and prosecuted Paul Manafort in that role.
