{"id":137167,"date":"2025-11-19T15:09:41","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T23:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xira.com\/p\/2025\/11\/19\/lindsey-halligan-officially-more-stupid-than-you-imagined\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T15:09:41","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T23:09:41","slug":"lindsey-halligan-officially-more-stupid-than-you-imagined","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xira.com\/p\/2025\/11\/19\/lindsey-halligan-officially-more-stupid-than-you-imagined\/","title":{"rendered":"Lindsey Halligan Officially More Stupid Than You Imagined"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lindsey Halligan, the insurance lawyer elevated to run the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, has managed to run face first into a professional wood chipper over and over during her short and almost assuredly illegal tenure. <\/p>\n<p>Thrust into the job because no one with any prosecutorial experience would sign off on criminal cases against former FBI Director James \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/05\/james-comey-enjoys-long-walks-on-the-beach-so-maga-gonna-send-him-to-el-salvador-prison-camp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">8647<\/a>\u201d Comey and current NY Attorney General Letitia James \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/10\/comey-files-motions-to-dismiss-for-maam-do-you-even-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cases that make no sense<\/a> \u2014 Halligan approached the task at hand in a manner befitting a graduate of the Dunning Kruger School of Law, digging the government into successively deeper holes at every turn. Last week, she finally appeared in court to explain herself and <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/11\/lindsey-halligans-day-in-court\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it did not go well<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But last week, we thought the dumbest part of Halligan\u2019s bogus cases would be signing off on indictments without a trace of authority. As it turns out, it\u2019s so much worse! Halligan took Comey to court even though the grand jury never saw, much less voted on the operative indictment.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"936\" height=\"410\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/abovethelaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/11\/Screenshot-2025-11-19-at-1.46.58-PM.png?resize=936%2C410&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1173213\" title=\"\"><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Questions about the indictment swirled from jump, when the court wondered why they\u2019d received two different indictments, confusingly at odds over the number of charges. The government never offered much of a satisfactory explanation for this, and ultimately the Magistrate ordered the DOJ to turn over grand jury material to Comey\u2019s lawyers. Halligan fought this, and now we know why: she had, in fact, royally screwed up the grand jury process.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Bower <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AnnaBower\/status\/1991214831328698760?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">lays out the full timeline<\/a>, but the short version is that the grand jury heard three charges and rejected count one. The Justice Department then drafted a new indictment that listed only the two counts that the grand jury had enough votes to approve and \u2014 without sending this document to the grand jury \u2014 just had the foreperson sign it.<\/p>\n<p>This is why it\u2019s a bad idea to drive all the experienced prosecutors out of your office. But, remember, they all had to go because they all knew this case was frivolous.
