{"id":137962,"date":"2025-12-01T18:36:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T02:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xira.com\/p\/2025\/12\/01\/the-dangers-of-unrestrained-partisanship\/"},"modified":"2025-12-01T18:36:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T02:36:11","slug":"the-dangers-of-unrestrained-partisanship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xira.com\/p\/2025\/12\/01\/the-dangers-of-unrestrained-partisanship\/","title":{"rendered":"The Dangers Of Unrestrained Partisanship"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"721\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/abovethelaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/03\/finger-pointing-pass-buck-blame.jpg?resize=1080%2C721&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-110294\" title=\"\"><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Partisans can make everything partisan.<\/p>\n<p>For example, who causes a standoff?<\/p>\n<p>Both sides.<\/p>\n<p>It takes two to stand off.\u00a0If either side gave in to its opponent\u2019s position, there would be no standoff.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So who caused the government shutdown?<\/p>\n<p>Both sides, of course.\u00a0The Republicans were being stubborn on issues that mattered to Republicans.\u00a0The Democrats were being stubborn on issues that mattered to Democrats.\u00a0You might agree with one side or the other about whose stubbornness was more reasonable, or which issue better justified stubbornness, but there can be no doubt about who caused the government to shut down:\u00a0Both sides did.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an even worse example:\u00a0Who\u2019s to blame for\u00a0Rahmanullah Lakanwal having shot two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., last week?<\/p>\n<p>Rahmanullah Lakanwal, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe you could break it down further.\u00a0Let\u2019s allocate blame as, say:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>95% Lakanwal, who was, after all, the shooter;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>1% Lakanwal\u2019s parents and health care professionals, who probably didn\u2019t raise him right and treated his mental illness poorly;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>1% the Taliban and the CIA, who together seemingly caused some of Lakanwal\u2019s mental health issues;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>1% the Biden administration for having allowed Lakanwal to enter the United States in 2021 under the Operation Allies Welcome parole program for Afghans who had helped the U.S. during the war;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>1% the Trump administration for having granted asylum to Lakanwal in April 2025;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>1% the Trump administration for shifting its focus from anti-terrorism efforts to border enforcement (if it turns out that Lakanwal was a terrorist);\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>1% the Trump administration for sending the National Guard to the District of Columbia, without coordinating with the local police and over local opposition, for the political purpose of trying to embarrass a city run by Democrats;\u00a0and<\/li>\n<li>1% the Trump administration for sending the National Guard to D.C. despite warnings that the Guard\u2019s deployment presented an easy \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/2025\/11\/national-guard-was-target\/685089\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">target of opportunity<\/a>\u201d for grievance-based violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perfect!\u00a0Except that my percentages probably add up to more than 100. But you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0Rahmanullah Lakanwal shoots someone,\u00a0Rahmanullah Lakanwal is to blame.\u00a0The rest is petty bickering.<\/p>\n<p>Who was responsible for trying to assassinate Donald Trump last summer?<\/p>\n<p>The shooter.<\/p>\n<p>Who was responsible for assassinating Charlie Kirk?<\/p>\n<p>The shooter.<\/p>\n<p>You can quibble around the edges of these things, always assigning blame to the other side for having very slightly contributed to the shooter\u2019s motivations.\u00a0But that slight blame is nothing compared to where the blame really lies.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, in situations such as these, it probably makes sense to put partisanship aside for a moment \u2014 both to lower the temperature of our country\u2019s political climate and to more accurately place responsibility for atrocities where the responsibility truly lies.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n<p><strong><em><strong><em>Mark\u00a0Herrmann\u00a0spent 17 years as a partner at a leading international law firm and later oversaw litigation, compliance and employment matters at a large international company.
