The version unveiled today represents what LexisNexis describes as the most comprehensive integration yet of multiple data sources for legal AI work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegal professionals want one trusted legal AI workflow solution,\u201d said Sean Fitzpatrick, CEO of LexisNexis North America, UK, and Ireland. \u201cOnly LexisNexis can bring together agentic intelligence, customer documents, open web insights, and our authoritative content to produce next-level legal drafts and work output backed by Shepard\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The product\u2019s rapid pace of development from August to now also underscores the competitive intensity in the legal AI market, as well as what LexisNexis describes as its commitment to \u201ccustomer-driven innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Unified Content Sources<\/h3>\n<p>Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 General AI is designed to work alongside Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Legal AI and allow legal professionals to access general AI models within the company\u2019s existing Lexis+ AI workflow.<\/p>\n<p>LexisNexis says this enables users to choose between Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Legal AI, which is optimized for authoritative legal AI workflows like legal drafting and analysis, or Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 General AI, which allows users to perform various tasks using the latest available AI models grounded in web content and LexisNexis content.<\/p>\n<p>The core advancement in this release is Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 General AI\u2019s ability to easily combine insights from three distinct content sources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Customer legal documents uploaded to the system.<\/li>\n<li>Open web search results.<\/li>\n<li>LexisNexis\u2019s comprehensive legal content database.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Users retain control over which content sources Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 draws upon, allowing them to ground responses in all sources or select specific combinations of LexisNexis content, web sources, and their own documents.<\/p>\n<h3>Intelligent Model Selection<\/h3>\n<p>Another significant enhancement is the introduction of \u201cBest Fit\u201d mode, which automatically selects the optimal AI model for each specific task. Users can also manually choose from an expanded roster of AI models, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Claude Sonnet 4.5 from Anthropic.<\/li>\n<li>GPT-5.1 from OpenAI.<\/li>\n<li>Claude Sonnet 4<\/li>\n<li>GPT-4o<\/li>\n<li>GPT-5<\/li>\n<li>OpenAI o3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anything generated from these models that Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 General AI recognizes as legal citations are verified and linked through the Shepard\u2019s Citation Agent, providing an additional layer of reliability for legal professionals working with general-purpose AI models.<\/p>\n<h3>Enhanced Agentic Capabilities<\/h3>\n<p>Behind the scenes, Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 General AI includes what LexisNexis describes as \u201ca new agentic infrastructure\u201d that enables AI agents to collaborate on complex legal workflows requiring broad understanding from diverse data sources.<\/p>\n<p>The system includes four specialized agents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Orchestrator Agent<\/strong>: Coordinates multiple agents working together.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legal Research Agent<\/strong>: Decomposes user prompts into legal questions and generates answers based on relevant legal authorities from LexisNexis content.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Web Search Agent<\/strong>: Brings relevant open web insights into Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 responses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Customer Document Research Agent<\/strong>: Autonomously reasons, plans and uses other research tools to produce analysis based on customers\u2019 own documents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>LexisNexis says this infrastructure extends what it calls \u201cAgentic Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG),\u201d which itsays excels at understanding user intent, intelligently planning workflows, and retrieving authoritative information to ensure accurate and grounded AI responses.<\/p>\n<h3>Expanded Use Cases<\/h3>\n<p>According to LexisNexis, the enhanced Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 General AI now enables legal professionals to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Draft more precise communications for both legal and non-legal audiences, including client emails, matter updates, and plain-language explanations<\/li>\n<li>Accelerate foundational research with fast overviews of technical concepts and evolving areas such as AI policy and crypto regulation<\/li>\n<li>Enrich legal work with real-world context by incorporating non-legal sources to strengthen legal strategy and recommendations<\/li>\n<li>Drive strategic ideation by outlining arguments, testing counterpoints, exploring alternative approaches, and obtaining a second \u201copinion\u201d from AI<\/li>\n<li>Break down complex, multi-layered problems across M&amp;A, compliance, multi-party disputes, and emerging regulatory issues<\/li>\n<li>Securely upload and analyze documents, generating summaries, issue lists, and audience-specific versions across a wider range of formats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The system also now supports Deep Research capabilities and advanced reasoning for high-complexity legal problems, features that users can toggle on or off as needed.<\/p>\n<h3>Security and Control<\/h3>\n<p>LexisNexis emphasizes that all of this functionality operates within what it describes as a \u201cfully encrypted Lexis+ AI environment\u201d that provides \u201centerprise-grade data privacy protections for confident access to general purpose models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organizations can disable general AI access entirely for users, and individual users can toggle the feature on or off according to their preferences or firm policies.<\/p>\n<p>The company also highlights a \u201cstreamlined interface\u201d that keeps questions, sources, citations, and drafts together for what it describes as \u201ca more efficient, transparent workflow.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Evolution of Prot\u00e9g\u00e9<\/h3>\n<p>Today\u2019s announcement represents the latest milestone in the rapid evolution of LexisNexis\u2019s Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 AI assistant since its initial unveiling in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The original Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 preview, coincidentally launched in August 2024 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawnext.com\/2024\/08\/its-the-battle-of-the-ai-legal-assistants-as-lexisnexis-unveils-its-new-protege-and-thomson-reuters-rolls-out-cocounsel-2-0.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the same day as Thomson Reuters\u2019 CoCounsel 2.0<\/a>, introduced agentic AI capabilities and emphasized personalization based on user profiles and preferences.<\/p>\n<p>It was made generally available in January 2025 with features including autonomous task completion and the ability to review its own work.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2025, LexisNexis launched Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 General AI in customer preview, allowing users to toggle between legal-specific and general-purpose AI models.
