She landed a series of extraordinarily prestigious clerkships: first with Judge Corey Maze of the Northern District of Alabama, then with Eleventh Circuit Judge William Pryor, and ultimately with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. That\u2019s a golden ticket path most law students would kill for.<\/p>\n<p>The only problem is, Clanton was very famously fired from the far-right Turning Point USA when a racist text she sent coworkers became public.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right, Clanton used to work at conservative student group Turning Point USA. But in 2017,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/a-conservative-nonprofit-that-seeks-to-transform-college-campuses-faces-allegations-of-racial-bias-and-illegal-campaign-activity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reports surfaced<\/a> that she texted coworkers, \u201cI HATE BLACK PEOPLE. Like fuck them all .\u2009.\u2009. I hate blacks. End of story.\u201d Despite this notoriety, this was far from the end of Clanton\u2019s story. She bounced back with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2018\/09\/i-hate-black-people-says-ginni-thomass-assistant-yes-clarences-wife\/?rf=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a job with Ginni Thomas<\/a>\u00a0(Clarence\u2019s wife), even moving in with the Thomases for a time.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2020\/06\/shockingly-law-school-named-for-affirmative-action-opponent-bad-at-race-and-diversity\/?rf=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">She then was admitted to<\/a>\u00a0George Mason University\u2019s ASS Law, then onto <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2021\/11\/congress-wants-some-answers-about-federal-judges-hiring-the-i-hate-black-people-law-school-student\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">those clerkships<\/a> (and, of course, the formal investigation for hiring someone with such a questionable reputation, which ultimately found there was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2022\/01\/federal-judges-that-hired-the-i-hate-black-people-law-school-student-cleared-of-misconduct\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">no misconduct<\/a>\u00a0on the part of the judges who hired Clanton).<\/p>\n<p>Now that Clanton\u2019s Supreme Court clerkship with Justice Thomas has wrapped up, curiosity has turned to the obvious question: where does someone like this land next?<\/p>\n<p>David Lat <a href=\"https:\/\/davidlat.substack.com\/p\/crystal-clanton-is-now-an-attorney-or-lawyer-at-america-first-legal-afl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found the answer<\/a>, and it is exactly what you\u2019d expect.<\/p>\n<p>Crystal Clanton is now an attorney at the America First Legal Foundation (AFL), the aggressively partisan conservative nonprofit law firm co-founded in 2021 by Gene Hamilton and Stephen Miller shortly after the end of the first Trump administration. Hamilton is back at AFL after a six-month White House stint and serves as its president. Miller, meanwhile, has returned to the White House (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/26\/trump-administration-maga-allies-spread-misinformation-on-pretti-killing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at least for now<\/a>), where he continues his specialty of turning President Trump\u2019s worst impulses into reality.<\/p>\n<p>AFL prides itself on being combative, provocative, and unapologetically ideological. As Lat noted, it\u2019s an organization that \u201cdelights in triggering or trolling the left.\u201d  And one of the cases that Clanton has already appeared in on behalf of AFL is an anti-trans rights case, because of course.<\/p>\n<p>The trajectory here is depressingly coherent. Fired for offensive texts. Rehired into the Thomas orbit. Ushered through elite clerkships.
