Multiple submissions are encouraged. There is no entry fee.<\/p>\n<p>The prizes, besides bragging rights, are a one-year membership in ACES: The Society for Editing (we all need to edit our work, amirite?), publicity on the Grammar Girl podcast (no bad publicity for a lawyer), and a signed copy of \u201cGrammar Daily: 365 Quick Tips for Successful Writing from Grammar Girl (Quick &amp; Dirty Tips).\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-writing-mistakes-can-spark-winning-poetry\">Writing Mistakes Can Spark Winning Poetry<\/h2>\n<p>Did you ever accidentally type \u201cyour\u201d for \u201cyou\u2019re,\u201d and your proofreading software didn\u2019t catch it? That happened (minus the intervention of technology) in an early manuscript of Shakespeare\u2019s Hamlet. The error inspired Leslie F. Miller to write the poetry contest\u2019s 2024 winning entry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c8f569d080a16d5685a5b3c42ddab56a\"><strong><em>In a tale by a playwright historic,<br \/>A jester from Denmark (not Zurich)<br \/>Had always penned \u201cyour\u201d<br \/>When he\u2019d really meant \u201cyou\u2019re\u201d<br \/>Now we call him, alas, Poor Yorick.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2025 winner, Salma Amanda Latifa, reminds the reader of many of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attorneyatwork.com\/your-livelihood-depends-on-persuasive-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the lessons<\/a> Get To The Point has preached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8ea8742c665f3c0589007083a2e3dd74\"><em><strong>Noun stands firm, giving a name,<br \/>Verb takes action, shaping the frame.<br \/>Adjective paints colors and hue,<br \/>Adverb explains how things ensue.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re ready to rant about word counts or some other lawyer\u2019s sloppy drafting, channel that emotion into a poem. Dashing off a poem can be reassuringly cathartic.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-poetry-improves-your-communication\">Poetry Improves Your Communication<\/h2>\n<p>Attorney At Work has previously advocated <a href=\"http:\/\/poetry%20teaches%20economy%20of%20language.%20it%20delivers%20brilliant%20examples%20of%20how%20every%20word%20must%20earn%20its%20place.%20attorneys,%20perhaps%20more%20than%20journalists%20or%20busy%20authors,%20write%20under%20a%20constraint.%20besides%20the%20obvious%20constraint%20of%20time,%20they\u2019re%20under%20a%20constant%20demand%20for%20clarity%20and%20concision.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reading poetry daily<\/a>. Like good legal writing, poetry consists of powerful words delivering a concise message. Lawyers need to be good at that. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exercising-your-poetic-skills-can-improve-your-legal-writing\">Exercising your poetic skills can improve your legal writing. <\/h3>\n<p>Pulitzer Prize winner and Librarian of Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archibald_MacLeish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Archibald MacLeish<\/a> was one of several American lawyers who became well-known poets. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Moorhead\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richa<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Moorhead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">r<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Moorhead\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">d Moorhead<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mona_Arshi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mona Arshi<\/a> are among a bunch of prize-winning lawyer-poets from the UK. There\u2019s no reason why you can\u2019t do it, too.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enter-national-grammar-day-poetry-contest\">Enter National Grammar Day Poetry Contest<\/h2>\n<p>All poems for the contest must be short. You might be able to put one together in a small number of tenths of an hour.
