Over the last few years, between the <a href=\"https:\/\/president.columbia.edu\/content\/our-resolution-federal-government\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump administration\u2019s assault on higher education funding<\/a> and congressional hearings designed to harass institutions over \u201cwokeness,\u201d anyone hoping to lead America\u2019s best schools learned that dealing with a meddlesome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/everything-is-content-for-the-clicktatorship\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clicktatorship<\/a> is now part of the job.<\/p>\n<p>Georgetown University Law Center needed a new dean after the departure of Dean William Treanor \u2014 who spent his final year in the job telling <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/03\/georgetown-law-to-ed-martin-f-all-the-way-off\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the administration\u2019s dullest hatchet men that they could pound sand<\/a> \u2014 and have just announced their selection.<\/p>\n<p>Liz Magill, the former University of Pennsylvania president (and Stanford Law dean), will take over, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgetown.edu\/news\/liz-magill-named-executive-vice-president-and-dean-of-georgetown-law\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the school announced on Friday<\/a>. Magill, who got pushed out at Penn after grandstanding legislators vilified her for committing the unforgivable sin of\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2023\/12\/penn-donors-push-out-president-continue-whistling-past-the-professor-bringing-white-nationalists-to-campus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accurately describing how university speech codes work<\/a>, brings that battle-tested experience to the T14 institution as its 17th dean. She will take over effective August 1.<\/p>\n<p>Magill wound up on the academic waiver wire following a 2023 House hearing alongside the presidents of MIT and Harvard. Representative Elise Stefanik asked whether \u201ccalling for the genocide of Jews\u201d would violate Penn\u2019s code of conduct \u2014 a curious question from a legislator who had her own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/elise-stefanik-great-replacement-buffalo-shooter-1354054\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cozy history with replacement theory<\/a>. Magill gave the legally accurate answer that it would depend upon context, igniting a class of lemming donors to push her out. Donors who, it bears mentioning, seem to have no problem with Penn\u2019s continued employment of Amy Wax, the law professor who says Black students aren\u2019t generally <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2018\/03\/professor-declares-black-students-rarely-graduate-in-the-top-half-of-law-school-class\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">smart enough to finish in the top half of the school<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2023\/09\/amy-wax-white-supremacist-speaker-again\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">invites white nationalists to campus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2026\/02\/13\/liz-magill-georgetown-law-school-dean-00778065\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exclusive interview with Politico<\/a>, Magill reflected on how she wishes she had better phrased her congressional testimony to balance the legal reality with the concerns of students:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMy testimony in Congress left people distressed, and it particularly did that for Jewish students back on the Penn campus,\u201d Magill told me. \u201cI take very seriously the response that people had to my testimony, and I regret that I conveyed a lack of compassion and care and good sense to those people.\u201d She added, \u201cI want every Jewish student, a student of every faith, every view, every single student to feel they are in a secure environment and they\u2019re in a place where they can flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Having left the Penn position, the former Ginsburg clerk sought out a new position with a school more willing to absorb some heat.
