Nowadays, it is easy to say that his purchase of the company formerly (and currently) known as Twitter at an above-market cost so he could make a 420 joke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/weed-joke-agreed-deal-inside-musks-44-bln-twitter-buyout-2022-04-26\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the hopes that his then girlfriend would find it funny<\/a> was dumb. It was easy to say so back then too, but I digress. A lawsuit alleging that Musk misled Twitter investors resolved after years of litigation. And while the jury did find that he was not guilty of a greater fraud scheme, the outcome was not entirely in his favor. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/20\/elon-musk-determined-to-be-liable-for-misleading-twitter-investors.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNBC<\/a> has coverage:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A jury in California found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/elon-musk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk<\/a> defrauded Twitter shareholders during the runup to his $44 billion acquisition of the social media company, according to a verdict issued on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Total damages could reach up to $2.6 billion, attorneys for the plaintiffs said.<\/p>\n<p>The class action lawsuit, Pampena v. Musk, was originally filed in October 2022, after Musk completed his purchase of Twitter for $54.20 per share.<br \/>\u2026<br \/>\u201cThis is a great example of what you cannot do to the average investor \u2014 people that have 401ks, kids, pension funds, teachers, firemen, nurses,\u201d Joseph Cotchett, an attorney for the Twitter investors, told CNBC at the San Francisco courthouse.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Considering he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mattdurot\/2026\/02\/03\/elon-musk-just-became-the-first-person-ever-worth-800-billion-after-spacex-acquired-xai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clocked at over ~$800B last month<\/a>, they could round up the damages to a nice $3B (perhaps to make his ex laugh) and it would still be a rounding error compared to his hoarded wealth. To be frank, daily fluctuations in the market will probably have a bigger outcome than this decision \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg\u2019s current valuation of him at $641B<\/a> reads less like \u201cThis guy lost ~$160B in a month!\u201d and more like \u201cHey, we all have rough Mondays.\u201d And before any poindexters respond, \u201cWell actually most of the wealth is locked in stock so it isn\u2019t liquid,\u201d he could just <em>sell some of his shares<\/em>. Plenty of people have had to do things like sell their homes to pay off legal fees; there\u2019s no use in pretending that liquefying your assets becomes some huge burden once you become rich. Further, it would make for a nice full circle moment given that <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/elon-musk-accused-improperly-selling-75-billion-tesla\/14917474\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he sold some of his Tesla shares as part of the plan to buy Twitter back in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Represented by Quinn Emanuel, Musk intends to appeal the verdict. And good on them.
