The now-former Attorney General was subpoenaed to appear before the House Oversight Committee last month. In a rare bipartisan moment fueled by the principle that \u201cthis looks bad\u201d (sometimes) transcends party lines, five Republicans on the committee joined the Dems to demand answers over Bondi\u2019s handling of the Epstein files.<\/p>\n<p>But assistant attorney general Patrick Davis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/pam-bondi-backs-out-epstein-deposition_n_69d67247e4b048dba44a32fd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote to the committee <\/a>to \u201ckindly ask that you confirm that the subpoena is withdrawn,\u201d and that the DOJ \u201ccontinues to believe that additional compulsory process is unnecessary in light of our demonstrated willingness to voluntarily assist your oversight efforts.\u201d And a spokesperson for the Department said, \u201cBecause of the leadership transition at the Department, the subpoena no longer applies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Which, I guess if you never ask the answer is always no. But, let\u2019s be so fucking for real right now, that argument is about as persuasive as a toddler claiming bedtime \u201cno longer applies\u201d because they changed into different pajamas. Unsurprisingly, the committee is not buying what DOJ is selling at the clearance rack of accountability \u2014 they\u2019ve already confirmed they\u2019ll reach out to her personal attorney. \u201cThe Department of Justice has stated Pam Bondi will not appear on April 14 for a deposition since she is no longer Attorney General and was subpoenaed in her capacity as Attorney General,\u201d a spokeswoman for Oversight Republicans said in a statement. \u201cThe Committee will contact Pam Bondi\u2019s personal counsel to discuss next steps regarding scheduling her deposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plus the committee has already heard testimony from, ahem, <em>former<\/em> Attorney General Bill Barr, proving that \u201cex-A.G.\u201d is not, in fact, a cloak of invisibility. And top Democrat on the committee Rep. Richard Garcia made it clear he\u2019s not going to let this go. \u201cShe must come in to testify immediately, and if she defies the subpoena, we will begin contempt charges in the Congress,\u201d he said. \u201cThe survivors deserve justice.\u201d Rep. James Walkinshaw noted the subpoena \u201cdid not become null and void when she was fired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican Nancy Mace also had strong words for the flimsy excuse. \u201cLeaving office doesn\u2019t mean you get to dodge accountability,\u201d Mace said in a statement. \u201cPam Bondi was subpoenaed by name, not by title, and because the DOJ stonewalled Congress and refused to follow the law, she needs to appear before the Oversight Committee and answer for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe promised she would comply,\u201d she said. \u201cApril 14 is her chance to prove it.
