He even floated a presidential run and <a href=\"https:\/\/legaltalknetwork.com\/podcasts\/thinking-like-a-lawyer\/2019\/02\/the-michael-avenatti-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">appeared on America\u2019s favorite podcast<\/a>. His domination of the news that year earned him <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2019\/01\/above-the-laws-2018-lawyer-of-the-year-contest-the-winner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Above the Law\u2019s<\/em> 2018 Lawyer of the Year<\/a> award.<\/p>\n<p>Then he became <em>the other kind<\/em> of ATL story, as cases cropped up <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2019\/03\/michael-avenatti-charged-with-a-whole-bunch-of-stuff-out-of-multiple-usaos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on both coasts<\/a> alleging an effort to extort millions in settlement money from Nike, stealing $300,000 from Stormy Daniels \u2014 his own client \u2014 through identity theft and wire fraud, embezzling millions from four other clients including a mentally ill paraplegic, and obstructed IRS efforts to collect payroll taxes from his coffee business. His domination of the news for all the wrong reasons earned him <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2022\/12\/above-the-laws-2022-lawyer-of-the-year-contest-the-finalists\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a nomination for our Lawyer of the Year award in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Avenatti landed in federal prison.<\/p>\n<p>But now he\u2019s back! Or at least halfway back, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2026\/04\/08\/michael-avenatti-out-of-prison\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TMZ reports<\/a> the former gadfly attorney currently resides at a halfway house in Hollywood until September 2028, which is spectacularly on-brand.<\/p>\n<p>Avenatti was reportedly released Tuesday after serving roughly four years of his 11-year, 3-month sentence (he was once sentenced to 14 years, but resentencing shaved some time off). He still owes $5,937,725.58 in restitution and is required to participate in mental health treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Avenatti built his fame as Trump\u2019s most aggressive legal antagonist. He emerges into a world where Trump is back in the White House shielded with <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2024\/07\/scotus-greenlights-seal-team-6-solution\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">functional total immunity courtesy of judicial fiat<\/a> and lawyers who break the basic rules of professional responsibility <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/05\/trump-reportedly-eyes-emil-bove-for-third-circuit-as-were-now-wistful-for-era-of-random-unqualified-fedsoc-hacks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">collect lifetime judicial appointments<\/a> instead of halfway house assignments (as long as they do it on the government\u2019s behalf).
