In this administration, where the <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/10\/district-judges-fight-to-save-the-rule-of-law-while-doj-and-supreme-court-snicker\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DOJ lies to courts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/10\/things-at-the-doj-are-just-as-lawless-as-you-feared\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">persecutes refugees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/04\/trump-doj-indicts-civil-rights-group-for-working-to-take-down-hate-groups\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filing criminal charges against civil rights workers<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/04\/judge-leon-to-trump-for-real-this-time-a-fancy-ballroom-is-not-a-national-security-necessity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">building a massive, unnecessary palace for its emperor<\/a>, this agency LARPs as the Empire at its most cartoonishly evil.<\/p>\n<p>But most of all, this post is just sad. <\/p>\n<p>The legal profession is, admittedly, too stuffy. But the Department of Justice is not the corner of the profession that needs to loosen up. Prosecutors are charged with the most awesome and potentially destructive power available to a lawyer. The people filling these positions have the power to bring the fully armed and operational force of the federal government to bear on an individual, with that person\u2019s life and liberty on the line. It\u2019s the same problem as judges <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2015\/12\/unprofessional-judge-calls-public-defender-unprofessional\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">putting punchlines in their opinions<\/a> \u2014 it\u2019s all well and good when corporations quibble over contracts, but it\u2019s grotestque to work on your tight five while exiling a human being to prison. Prosecutors should respect the gravity of the position.<\/p>\n<p>In February, former Trump DOJ Chief of Staff Chad Mizelle posted a tweet <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/02\/doj-hiring-ausas-over-twitter-now\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asking prospective AUSAs to slide into his DMs<\/a>. But that was the <em>Last Jedi<\/em> to this <em>Rise of Skywalker<\/em> \u2014 this is a whole new low befitting an institution that just brought <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/04\/james-comey-indicted-for-playing-with-sea-shells-in-new-low-point-for-doj-integrity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a criminal case over seashells<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Who greenlit this script? \u201cIn the pursuit of the law\u201d? But you don\u2019t pursue the law, you practice law. You pursue justice. (Well, <em>this<\/em> DOJ doesn\u2019t, but in theory.) And I get that they\u2019re aiming for Yoda \u2014 \u201cDo or do not, there is no try\u201d \u2014 but the line \u201cThere Is No Try \u2014 Only Do\u201d lands closer to Charlie from <em>It\u2019s Always Sunny<\/em>. Then again, this DOJ writes briefs like an <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/04\/doj-files-ballroom-brief-that-reads-like-truth-social-post-because-trump-probably-wrote-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">illiterate concussion patient<\/a>, so maybe this is their target recruitment audience.
