Lawyers would take massive pay cuts to move into a cramped federal building office so they could add a prestigious new line item to their resumes. The federal government had its pick from among the best candidates in the legal profession.<\/p>\n<p>Now they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/05\/doj-posts-star-wars-themed-tweet-seeking-recruits-who-misunderstand-the-whole-point-of-star-wars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">running bad Star Wars ads<\/a> and promising $25,000 bonuses just to convince halfway competent applicants to fill out an application.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/us-law-week\/doj-offers-lawyers-25-000-signing-bonuses-as-recruitment-lags\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg Law News reports<\/a> that the Civil Division now offers $25,000 signing bonuses for those will to \u201cstaff offices investigating youth transgender treatments and litigating the Trump administration\u2019s immigration agenda.\u201d And the good financial news doesn\u2019t stop with new hires, with biweekly \u201cretention incentive allowances\u201d ranging from roughly $60 to $220 to keep the lawyers who haven\u2019t yet bolted for a job that allows them to look themselves in the mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Having lifted the requirement that <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/03\/pam-bondis-doj-lowers-hiring-standards-after-driving-away-lawyers-with-actual-experience\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">applicants have any real experience<\/a>, the Justice Department has apparently picked over the lowest-hanging fruit and decided that it can only solve its staffing issues with cold hard cash. The Bloomberg piece frames this as \u201can apparent first,\u201d a polite way of describing a Department trapped in a precipitous lowering of its standards.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a problem that stretches to every corner of the DOJ. The Solicitor General\u2019s office has <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/04\/attorneys-are-fleeing-from-the-solicitor-generals-office\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hemorrhaged at least half<\/a> of its career attorneys. The Civil Rights Division has shed <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2025\/05\/the-doj-civil-right-division-is-decimated\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 60 percent of its workforce<\/a> since January 2025. U.S. Attorney\u2019s Offices around the country are <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/02\/doj-feels-the-squeeze-as-dhss-courtroom-pain-sponge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cracking under the strain<\/a> of cleaning up after DHS and an immigration enforcement regime that treats federal court orders as mere suggestions.
