We sat down with Josh Shilts, CPA, ASA, ABVCFFCGMA, CFE to discuss his career post-merger with Dean Dorton where he now serves as managing director of forensic and valuation services.<\/em><\/p>\n

AALM:<\/strong> A lot has changed for you since we last featured you in these pages. Tell us about the merger with Dean Dorton in 2024.<\/p>\n

JS:<\/strong> In 2024, our firm joined Dean Dorton, and it has been a very good move for me and for the practice. It gave me a larger platform, more resources, and broader reach, but without changing the things that mattered to me in the first place \u2014 doing good work, being responsive, and maintaining strong relationships with lawyers and clients.<\/p>\n

It was something I had been thinking through for quite a while. I had reached a point where I was looking carefully at what would best support the next phase of my practice and where I wanted to go professionally.<\/p>\n

What made it the right move was that it felt like a fit, not just a transaction. Dean Dorton has a strong reputation, good people, and a real commitment to client service. That mattered to me. The more I got to know the firm and the people there, the more it became clear that we approached clients and growth in a very similar way.<\/p>\n

AALM:<\/strong> How have your services aligned with Dean Dorton\u2019s overall mission? How has the company\u2019s position better supported your career?<\/p>\n

JS:<\/strong> My work is centered on helping lawyers and clients deal with important financial issues in a way that is clear, credible, and defensible. That aligns well with Dean Dorton\u2019s broader mission of helping clients solve complex problems and make sound decisions.<\/p>\n

From a practical standpoint, being part of Dean Dorton gives me a stronger platform to do that work. I still focus on forensic accounting, valuation, and dispute-related matters, but now I do it with more depth around me and more opportunities to collaborate across service lines when a matter calls for it. That has helped me continue building the practice in a way that is broader and more durable.<\/p>\n

AALM:<\/strong> What are some recent trends you are seeing in your industry?<\/p>\n

JS:<\/strong> One clear trend is that matters are becoming more data-heavy and more complex. There is usually more information, more digital evidence, and more need for experts to take complicated financial issues and explain them clearly. Financial issues are also showing up in a wider range of disputes.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, I think that continues. I expect to see more matters involving business valuation, fraud, tracing, post-transaction disputes, digital records, and cases where the financial story is a much bigger part of the case than it may appear at first.<\/p>\n

AALM:<\/strong> What impact has AI had in your industry \u2013 either as a tool in the execution of your services or as a tool used by the companies you are retained to evaluate?<\/p>\n

JS:<\/strong> AI as a tool can help with efficiency, data organization, and identifying patterns across large volumes of information. At the same time, in my line of work, AI does not replace judgment. Forensic accounting, valuation, and expert work still require experience, skepticism, context, and the ability to stand behind an opinion.<\/p>\n

We are seeing AI affect the businesses we evaluate. It can influence operations, staffing, forecasts, risk, and value. In some matters, it may even become part of the dispute itself. So, it is clearly important, but it has to be approached carefully.<\/p>\n

AALM:<\/strong> Looking ahead, what are your goals for your career?<\/p>\n

JS:<\/strong> My goal is to continue building a strong practice within Dean Dorton.My objectives are to continue expanding the practice, to further develop relationships within the legal community, and to consistently deliver work that is meaningful and held in high regard.<\/p>\n

I also want to help develop younger professionals coming into this field, because good work in this space depends on judgment, communication, and experience.<\/p>\n

Joining Dean Dorton has only strengthened my ability to do that. I am excited about what is ahead and appreciate the opportunity to continue serving that community in this next chapter.<\/p>\n
