The rule of law is at a nadir \u2014 we\u2019re seeing shit so dire that it makes the Magna Carta look like a pipe dream. Not only does the United States has a \u201cking\u201d whose mental capabilities have him on his 4th annual please-don\u2019t-be-too-demented mental check-in (worse numbers than there being 17 members in the T14), that same guy has broad criminal immunity and just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/doj-settlement-trump-bans-irs-taking-action-against-him\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">excused himself from the IRS investigating his finances<\/a>. Trump thinks that N-wording ICE will make people more amenable to the secret police, but doing so would require Congressional approval. That means nothing can stop him from doing it \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c794zlx5lx8o\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it isn\u2019t like he <em>actually<\/em> needed their approval to go to war with Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But hey, there might be a silver lining. While I still think that the doubleplusungooding that follows is an understatement, it\u2019s a step in the right direction of no longer being able to pretend how bad the state of the rule of law is now. <a href=\"https:\/\/home.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2026\/05\/legal-experts-say-rule-law-has-hit-10-year-low\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dartmouth<\/a> has coverage:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The rule of law in the United States has deteriorated to its lowest level in at least a decade, according to the first joint survey of federal judges, elite lawyers, and law professors by Bright Line Watch and UCLA School of Law\u2019s Safeguarding Democracy Project.<\/p>\n<p>The survey reports that under President Donald Trump\u2019s second term, legal experts perceive a significant erosion of the rule of law, including politicized law enforcement, a dysfunctional separation of powers, and overreach by the executive branch, based on data from Feb. 19 to March 6.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In good faith, is it worth pointing out that the legal experts\u2019 opinions may shift toward a more dire assessment of the rule of law if they were asked to opine today. The March 6th cut-off misses little developments like Trump\u2019s effective \u201cI bought you\u201d comments toward <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/05\/trump-to-gorsuch-and-barrett-i-made-you-i-can-break-you\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch<\/a>. Supreme Court<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2022\/08\/harvard-law-professor-argues-that-the-supreme-court-no-longer-cares-about-its-own-legitimacy-what-now\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> legitimacy<\/a> is one of those frail bulwarks that supports the rule of law, after all. Good to see that there\u2019s still optimism among the intelligentsia!
