The Trump Organization still hasn\u2019t shipped their promised Trump phone to most customers who laid down a $100 deposit a year ago. But\u00a0rubes<\/s>\u00a0patriots who signed up did get something else instead: their private data leaked to the public.\u00a0According to Techcrunch<\/a>, the Trump Mobile website openly shared customer emails, addresses, phone numbers, and other sensitive data.<\/p>\n

Trump Mobile has\u00a0subsequently confirmed the leak<\/a>, which they\u2019re blaming on somebody else:<\/p>\n

\u201cPhone provider Trump Mobile has confirmed that it was exposing customers\u2019 names, email addresses, mailing addresses, cell numbers, and order identifiers to the open internet\u2026[a spokesperson] said that the exposure was linked to a third-party platform provider that supports \u201ccertain Trump Mobile operations.\u201d He did not name the provider.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Whoops.<\/p>\n

Even calling Trump Mobile an actual company is generous. As we\u00a0noted when it was \u201claunched\u201d last year<\/a>, the company is really just a lazy rebrand of an existing MAGA-friendly MVNO provider, Patriot Mobile, which itself just resells T-Mobile service.<\/p>\n

A cornerstone of the venture was a \u201cmade in America\u201d gold \u201cTrump phone\u201d named the T1 that was supposed to launch last August. Though shortly after launch the Trump Organization eliminated all the \u201cmade in America\u201d claims. And the actual phone still hasn\u2019t arrived in the hands of most customers, despite people paying $100 as early as June last year to reserve one. So very on brand, really.<\/p>\n

Some of the Chinese-made phones have started showing up with reviewers, and it\u2019s not going great. The screen is smaller than promised, the gold is more of a sickly yellow, the American flag is\u00a0missing two stripes<\/a>, and the phone, despite promises that it was \u201cmade with American values in mind,\u201d appears to just be a\u00a0lazy rebrand<\/a>\u00a0of an existing two-year-old Chinese-made Android phone (the 2024 HTC U24 Pro).<\/p>\n

So it\u2019s a dated Chinese phone, slathered with Trump\u2019s name, gold paint, and an incorrect depiction of the U.S. flag \u2014 that\u2019s a year late, not particularly secure, and pre-loaded with propaganda (Truth Social). Again, very on brand. Though curiously in stark contrast to all of the Trump bravado about how he\u2019d\u00a0personally ensure most smartphones would now be made in the States<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Still, Trump Mobile execs are\u00a0trying to put on a brave face<\/a>\u00a0and pretend this is going well:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technology business is more difficult than some may realize, as parts must be tested for quality assurances,\u201d Trump Mobile CEO Pat O\u2019Brien said in a statement to CNET earlier this month. \u201cWe have experienced delays during a variety of steps in getting the T1 to completion, but those delays were worth it in our minds as we are delivering an amazing product.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Except there\u2019s no real indication that last bit is true. Like most Trump efforts to make money off his name, it\u2019s clear this entire thing was aggressively half-assed.<\/p>\n
