Microsoft\u2019s legal department is becoming a Harvey customer.<\/p>\n

The legal AI company Harvey announced today that Microsoft\u2019s Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) organization \u2014 the roughly 2,000-person unit that houses the company\u2019s lawyers and compliance professionals \u2014 will use the Harvey platform to support its legal and compliance operations.<\/p>\n

As part of the same announcement, Harvey said it will expand its own internal use of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft 365 Copilot, which the company said will put its teams \u201con the same trusted platform used by many of its customers.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Harvey, landing Microsoft\u2019s legal department as a customer is a significant milestone, given that it is arguably one of the most closely watched in-house legal teams in the technology industry. However, as I discuss more below, it is not so much a customer win as it is a next step in an evolving relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cMicrosoft\u2019s products are foundational to the work lawyers do, so we have always been grateful for our deep relationship with their team,\u201d said Winston Weinberg, Harvey\u2019s CEO, in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s announcement that Microsoft\u2019s legal team will use Harvey\u2019s platform and that Harvey associates will use more Microsoft products to support our global growth represents the next step in our ongoing relationship with their team, and we look forward to building on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Antony Cook, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel at Microsoft, said the company is \u201cpleased to expand our work with Harvey as part of our broader efforts to bring the benefits of AI into our operations,\u201d adding that the collaboration \u201cwill help our teams work more efficiently and focus on the complex, high-impact work that matters most.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Developing Relationship<\/h3>\n

Today\u2019s announcement is the latest step in a relationship that has been building for several years. Harvey runs on Microsoft\u2019s Azure infrastructure<\/a>, and in December 2024 the two companies announced integrations connecting Harvey with SharePoint, Word and Microsoft 365 Copilot.<\/p>\n

In March, Harvey went further, building its legal intelligence directly into Microsoft 365 Copilot<\/a> as an agent, and in June it extended that to Copilot Cowork<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Against that backdrop, today\u2019s news is not so much a customer win as it is a next step in an expanding relationship, with Microsoft\u2019s lawyers adopting Harvey, and Harvey standardizing on Microsoft.<\/p>\n

Even so, some might read Microsoft\u2019s adoption of a third-party legal AI as a tacit admission that Copilot alone cannot handle specialized legal work. After all, if Copilot fully met the needs of Microsoft\u2019s own lawyers, then CELA presumably would not need Harvey.<\/p>\n

But the reality is more nuanced. The fact of the matter is that Microsoft has consistently positioned Copilot as a horizontal platform designed to host specialized vertical agents, with Harvey as a perfect candidate.<\/p>\n

For that reason, its legal department\u2019s deployment of Harvey probably should not be seen as a repudiation of Copilot, but as a demonstration of this product ecosystem coming together as intended.<\/p>\n
