It\u2019s part of his plan to tackle food deserts and, ideally, drive down food costs generally. Predictably, conservatives began screeching like banshees over the arrangement. Armchair economists explained why <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/08\/02\/mamdani-city-owned-supermarkets-laws-of-economics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">selling products at wholesale prices can never work<\/a>, comparing cheap food <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/25\/us-news\/mamdani-releases-propaganda-video-promoting-soviet-style-city-run-grocery-stores\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to the Soviet Union<\/a>, and mocking the fact that liberals oppose voter ID while requiring an ID to buy groceries (<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/identification-new-york-grocery-stores-mamdani-a81f73db2db1752f3b4c75921272cd9f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the stores do not, in fact, require an ID<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But arguably the most impressive response came from Federalist Society co-founder David McIntosh:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I, for one, do not want to eat the suspiciously green bananas from the government store. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CFJJGUrAuM\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/CFJJGUrAuM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 David M. In that spirit, McIntosh followed up the brutal ratioing his post received with a video of himself awkwardly holding and then taking a bite out of a properly yellow banana he got (read: an intern got) from a \u201cbodega.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019d say \u201cHang it in the Louvre\u201d but <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2022\/08\/orange-you-glad-a-dizzying-dispute-over-what-constitutes-art\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">someone already tried that<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McIntosh is currently the president of Harlan Crow\u2019s Club for Growth \u2014 yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2023\/06\/harlan-crow-gibson-dunn-clarence-thomas-double-down\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that Harlan Crow<\/a> \u2014 and it\u2019s pretty clear his vision of \u201cgrowth\u201d does not include the people looking for affordable produce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the great Donald Trump once said:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An old fashioned term that we use \u2014 groceries.
