class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>Long before Jackie Houser ever stepped into a courtroom or purchased her own law firm, she was a little girl sitting quietly inside the office of her family\u2019s attorney.<\/p>\n<p>She remembers watching people arrive carrying burdens\u2014questions about their families, finances, businesses and futures. More importantly, she watched them leave carrying something entirely different.<\/p>\n<p>Answers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted people to come to me with problems,\u201d Houser recalls. \u201cI wanted to have the answers. I wanted them to leave with answers \u2026 maybe solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a remarkable dream for a young girl growing up in eastern North Carolina during the early 1970s. Her family was proudly blue collar. Her mother became the first person in the family to graduate from high school. Houser would eventually become the first to graduate from college.<\/p>\n<p>A career in law seemed less like an expectation than an impossibility.<\/p>\n<p>At first, even Houser\u2019s own aspirations were modest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought maybe I could be a legal secretary,\u201d she remembers with a smile. Then one conversation changed the course of her life.<\/p>\n<p>Family attorney R. Gene Braswell listened patiently as the young girl shared her dream. I wanted to have the answers. I wanted them to leave with answers &#8230; maybe solutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-75c4d615\" data-id=\"75c4d615\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2457526e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2457526e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Detours to a Destination<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54b24017 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"54b24017\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>Rather than heading directly to law school, Houser entered the legal profession through another door. She accepted a position with attorney Thomas E. Barwick, a decision that would prove every bit as life-changing as her childhood conversation with Braswell.<\/p>\n<p>Barwick quickly recognized potential that Houser herself had yet to fully appreciate.<\/p>\n<p>Less than a year after hiring her, he encouraged her to become a paralegal\u2014and then did something she still speaks about with obvious gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe paid for my paralegal education,\u201d she says. \u201cHe invested in me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even after she completed the program, Barwick never allowed her to become comfortable. \u201cHis next words were always, \u2018Now \u2026 law school.&#8217;\u201d At the time, Houser laughed off the suggestion.<\/p>\n<p>Life had other plans. Marriage. Children. Responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Like many women balancing career and family, she continued moving forward one step at a time, building a successful career as a paralegal while raising two children and eventually teaching in a paralegal program herself.<\/p>\n<p>The dream never disappeared. It simply waited.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, after her divorce and once both of her children had grown older, Houser made a decision that many people would have considered impossible.<\/p>\n<p>She would finally go to law school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waited until my youngest graduated from high school,\u201d she says. \u201cHe went off to college \u2026 and I went off to law school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughs now at the memory. \u201cIt was either amazing or crazy. Probably both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her daughter, Diane Belmont, who wears many hats in the law firm including office manager, remembers those years through a very different lens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp until then, Mom worked full time while earning her paralegal degree,\u201d Belmont explains. \u201cShe worked full time while finishing her bachelor\u2019s degree. Law school was actually the first time she ever got to be a traditional student. Of course, even then she was mentally juggling how to pay for the college tuitions for two kids as well as law school. It\u2019s just indicative of how strong she is, and how determined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For perhaps the first time in her life, Houser was able to devote herself completely to learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lived, breathed and ate law school,\u201d Belmont says. \u201cShe absolutely loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Listening to mother and daughter recall those years together reveals an easy affection built on shared memories and mutual admiration. Houser naturally downplays many of her accomplishments, while Belmont gently fills in the details her mother is inclined to skip. It\u2019s a dynamic that quietly surfaces throughout their conversations\u2014and one that says as much about Houser\u2019s character as any professional achievement.<\/p>\n<p>By the time she graduated, Houser had accumulated something many new attorneys lack: years of real-world legal experience, an appreciation for the people behind every file and an unwavering understanding that law was never simply about statutes or courtrooms.<\/p>\n<p>It was about helping people navigate some of life\u2019s most difficult moments. That belief would soon be tested.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-276d632 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"276d632\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings='\"background_background\":\"classic\"'>\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6266ad3\" data-id=\"6266ad3\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d33b532 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d33b532\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Growing and Learning<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9de4725 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9de4725\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>Following graduation, Houser returned to the law firm where she worked as a paralegal. There, for more than a decade, she represented insurance companies in personal injury litigation under the mentorship of attorney Robert Walker, Jr.<\/p>\n<p>From a professional standpoint, it was an outstanding opportunity. She gained invaluable trial experience, learned how insurance companies evaluate claims and developed a deep understanding of defense strategy\u2014knowledge that would later become one of her greatest assets.<\/p>\n<p>But something continued tugging at her conscience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere absolutely needs to be a defense,\u201d Houser says thoughtfully. \u201cThe system has to have balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pauses before continuing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I found myself in situations where every claim was denied. Every injured person was viewed as if they weren\u2019t telling the truth. I just \u2026 I wasn\u2019t happy with myself anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t about winning cases. It was about purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized that wasn\u2019t why I wanted to become a lawyer,\u201d she asserts.<\/p>\n<p>The little girl who once dreamed of becoming the person with the answers had never imagined herself creating more obstacles for people already struggling through some of the most difficult chapters of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted something different. She wanted to stand beside the injured rather than across from them. I knew the work. I knew the lawyers. I knew the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What she didn\u2019t know was exactly where the next chapter would lead. Like many turning points in her life, however, opportunity arrived through another relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney Richard Flexner had spent decades serving clients throughout southeastern North Carolina, building a respected practice founded on personal relationships and community trust. As he began considering retirement, Houser recognized not simply an opportunity to own a law firm, but a chance to continue a legacy that had already earned the confidence of generations of families.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, she purchased the practice, renaming it Flexner Houser Injury Law before eventually introducing what clients know today as Houser Injury Law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never wanted to erase what Richard built,\u201d Houser says. \u201cI wanted to build upon it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That distinction says much about her leadership philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout her career, Houser has consistently spoken less about changing institutions than about honoring the people who came before her. Just as she still credits Gene Braswell with planting a childhood dream, Tom Barwick with investing in her education and Robert Walker, Jr. with teaching her what it truly means to operate a successful business, she speaks of Flexner with equal respect.<\/p>\n<p>Every mentor added another layer. She believes injured people should understand what\u2019s happening in their cases rather than feeling intimidated by legal jargon.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, she believes people deserve honesty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell clients what they need to hear, not always what they want to hear,\u201d she explains. \u201cSometimes that\u2019s a difficult conversation. That same authenticity extends well beyond the courtroom.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to the office are just as likely to be greeted by Sophie, Houser\u2019s 16-year-old toy poodle, or Sasha, her beloved 13-year-old German Shepherd rescue, as they are members of the legal team. The dogs have become unofficial ambassadors, providing comfort and smiles to clients who often arrive carrying tremendous stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re family,\u201d Houser says simply.<\/p>\n<p>So, too, is the firm\u2019s relationship with the communities it serves.<\/p>\n<p>Opening a second office in Goldsboro held particular significance because it represented more than business expansion.<\/p>\n<p>It was a homecoming.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up nearby, Houser has never forgotten where she came from, nor the people who encouraged her long before law school became reality.
