Over in the business of law, private equity finally got the yes it\u2019s been chasing: Wood Smith Henning &amp; Berman, a 500-plus-lawyer insurance-defense shop<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/08\/private-equity-found-a-law-firm-that-said-yes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">, reportedly signed a letter of intent<\/a>\u00a0to sell a stake to Charlesbank Capital Partners at a roughly $700 million valuation. Structured through a management services organization to sidestep Rule 5.4\u2019s ban on non-lawyer ownership, it would be the largest PE investment in an American law firm to date \u2014 a toehold, not yet a takeover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in the category of career moves we can\u2019t recommend, a prominent Pittsburgh\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/08\/prominent-lawyer-charged-in-penn-state-frat-cocaine-ring\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attorney landed himself in a fraternity drug scandal<\/a>.
