{"id":161879,"date":"2026-08-31T10:47:56","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T18:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xira.com\/p\/2026\/08\/31\/the-iranian-october-surprise\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T10:47:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T18:47:56","slug":"the-iranian-october-surprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/xira.com\/p\/2026\/08\/31\/the-iranian-october-surprise\/","title":{"rendered":"The Iranian October Surprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose the United States manages to impose an economic stranglehold on Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose Iran feels desperate by late September.\u00a0The regime is beginning to wobble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you really think the Iranians would admit defeat and come to the negotiating table with their tale between their legs?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I personally doubt it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surely there are folks in Iran ginning up an October surprise that would devastate the Republicans (and Donald Trump) in the midterm elections.\u00a0I\u2019m a bit concerned about those possible Iranian ideas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iranians don\u2019t have to be able to hit the U.S. mainland with a nuclear weapon to cause a ton of trouble for us.\u00a0Chemical or biological agents could be smuggled into the U.S. (or manufactured here) and then released by Iranian operatives in a few strategic locations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack need not be that sophisticated. Even a few well-placed conventional weapons (or, for instance, airplanes; or, perhaps, this time around, trucks or trains) could do a lot of damage and affect the midterms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or a large-scale cyberattack would be quite an October surprise and quite a lasting disaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But my imagination is pretty limited.\u00a0Be more creative!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Couldn\u2019t the Iranians do something that would make the Strait of Hormuz unnavigable for the foreseeable future?\u00a0Couldn\u2019t they release some radiation, or blast a hole in an oil tanker to cause a large oil spill, or sink a couple of large ships in the relatively narrow navigable shipping lanes?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we really do manage to back the Iranians into a corner, I sure hope someone\u2019s thinking about what the Iranians might do to wiggle their way out of that nook \u2014 or simply to exact revenge on Donald Trump, the guy who started it all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more you think about this, the more depressed you\u2019ll become.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Iran launches an October surprise, what will Trump do (possibly with broad public support at that point) in the days after Election Day?\u00a0 If the Iranians have killed a bunch of Americans, or put a real dent in our way of life, America might be mad.\u00a0And Trump, of course, doesn\u2019t like to lose.\u00a0That could be a nasty combination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump doesn\u2019t have conventional weapons to spare, but might he nuke Pickaxe Mountain, the underground Iranian nuclear facility that can\u2019t be reached with conventional weapons?\u00a0Nuke Fordow, the other underground facility?\u00a0Nuke \u2019em both?\u00a0Add Tehran to the mix?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My imagination isn\u2019t sufficiently expansive to predict what the future might hold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I can sense the timing, and the direction, of what might happen shortly, and I don\u2019t like the picture my crystal ball portends.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Mark\u00a0Herrmann\u00a0spent 17 years as a partner at a leading international law firm and later oversaw litigation, compliance and employment matters at a large international company.
