We spend as a nation<\/a> five cents on civics education and $50 on STEM education per student. That difference is dramatic, and the lack of quality in our teaching of civics education has been proven by every matrix imaginable.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Schools are just not teaching it, and our kids are not learning it. And if they don\u2019t learn it, we\u2019re not going to keep our republic. So that is my greatest fear: that people don\u2019t understand our system of government. They don\u2019t understand what the First Amendment means.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some of my colleagues don\u2019t either, by the way. And I\u2019m not joking about that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2014<\/i><\/span> Justice Sonia Sotomayor<\/a>, in remarks reported by the Tulsa World<\/a>, explaining why the nation\u2019s lack of civics education \u2014 and Americans\u2019 resulting failure to understand their system of government \u2014 is her \u201cgreatest fear.\u201d<\/span> Sotomayor went on to criticize the fringe unitary executive theory, warning that it threatens the constitutional system of checks and balances. \u201cThat\u2019s not what was created [by the Constitution],\u201d she said. \u201cWe created a government with checks and balances, and the unitary executive theory is overturning that balance.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
