They need legal guidance, certainly, but perhaps even more importantly, they need someone they can trust.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly four decades, attorney Scott Costantino has built his practice around that simple but powerful principle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to treat our clients the way I would expect to be treated if I were the client,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>That philosophy has shaped every stage of his career\u2014from his earliest days as a young trial lawyer to establishing his own firm, mentoring the next generation of attorneys, and ultimately being elected president of one of the legal profession\u2019s most respected organizations. While courtroom victories have certainly marked his career, Costantino believes the most meaningful measure of success is something far less tangible: earning the confidence of those who place their futures in his hands.<\/p>\n<p>His journey to the practice of law wasn\u2019t the result of a lifelong childhood dream. As an undergraduate pursuing a finance degree, Costantino initially envisioned a career in business. A conversation with a friend introduced him to the possibility of combining business and law through a joint MBA and Juris Doctor program. His first position, however, introduced him to civil trial work focused primarily on defending personal injury cases.<\/p>\n<p>As the years passed, he found himself drawn to representing injured individuals instead.<\/p>\n<p>The transition fundamentally changed how he viewed the practice of law. Representing corporations centered on financial considerations. Representing individuals meant helping real people rebuild their lives after devastating injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found it much more rewarding because I was impacting someone\u2019s life on a very individual and real basis,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>His role extended far beyond legal advocacy. He enjoyed the collaborative environment. Yet he found himself increasingly drawn toward creating a practice where he could personally guide every client from beginning to end.<\/p>\n<p>Launching the Costantino Law Firm, P.A., represented both a professional challenge and a leap of faith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was something I had always wanted to do eventually,\u201d he says. \u201cNothing ventured, nothing gained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision has allowed him to practice law exactly as he envisioned.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike many larger firms, Costantino intentionally limits his caseload. Clients are not handed off to case managers or shuffled among multiple attorneys. Have even a brief conversation with this attorney and it becomes readily apparent he has an even more valuable skill \u2013 listening.<\/p>\n<p>Costantino believes clients need far more than legal analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need to know their concerns become our concerns,\u201d he emphasizes. \u201cCertainly, they cannot have that confidence if they don\u2019t feel they are truly being heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many clients arrive overwhelmed by circumstances they have never experienced before. While some of their questions involve legal strategy, many revolve around everyday realities: medical treatment, family responsibilities, employment concerns and uncertainty about the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes,\u201d he says, \u201csimply listening becomes one of the most valuable services an attorney can provide. Some come through remarkable victories.<\/p>\n<p>One case involved a client who received what appeared to be a substantial settlement offer\u2014an amount that would have changed her life financially. Yet Costantino believed it fell well short of what justice required.<\/p>\n<p>Although the final decision always belongs to the client, he encouraged her to trust both the preparation of the case and the legal process itself.<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>The eventual result at trial exceeded the original offer many times over. For Costantino, the case reinforced an important lesson: honest advice sometimes requires encouraging patience rather than accepting the quickest resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Other lessons have been far more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>One particularly emotional medical malpractice case involved representing a newborn whose case stretched over many years. After two trials, the jury ultimately ruled against the family.<\/p>\n<p>Professionally, it was heartbreaking. Personally, it left an even deeper impression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough I felt I had done my best and that we had made all the right arguments, at the end of the day, the jury decided against our position. That was very impactful to me because I saw up close and personal what the clients had gone through for a number of years, not only the child, but the parents,\u201d he explains. \u201cI also saw how they were devastated that they didn\u2019t get a favorable result at the end. This case reminded me we\u2019re dealing with humans and human tragedy.
