AI for law firms is quickly becoming part of day-to-day work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a profession historically cautious about new technology, that rate of adoption represents a dramatic increase from the less than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.8am.com\/reports\/legal-industry-report-2025\/?utm_source=aba&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=mc-mkt-leadership-lir-blog-productannouncement&amp;utm_content=sponsored-con\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one-third (31%) indicated in their 2025 report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one year, AI went from something most lawyers weren\u2019t using to something nearly four out of five were using in some capacity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But buying an AI platform and figuring out how a law firm should\u00a0actually use\u00a0it are two very different things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone\u00a0has to\u00a0understand the legal problem. Someone\u00a0has to determine where AI\u00a0should \u2014 and shouldn\u2019t \u2014 be involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone\u00a0has to\u00a0configure and test the system and determine whether the resulting work product is\u00a0actually any\u00a0good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increasingly, that someone is the legal engineer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What Do They Actually Do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose a corporate legal department handles hundreds of routine contracts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally, a\u00a0business person\u00a0sends something to Legal. A lawyer reviews it. Emails go back and forth. Somebody finds the right template. Somebody tracks approvals. Somebody follows up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A legal engineer looks at that process and asks: <strong>Why are we doing it this way<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Could intake be automated? Could the answers determine which agreement gets generated? Could AI identify provisions requiring lawyer review? Could routine agreements proceed without ever touching a lawyer\u2019s desk?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<strong>\u00a0lawyer<\/strong>\u00a0still determines the legal standards and handles the difficult judgment calls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<strong>legal engineer<\/strong>\u00a0builds the machine around them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can mean designing workflows, automating documents, configuring AI systems, connecting applications, analyzing data, and testing the finished product.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An Idea\u00a0Close\u00a0to\u00a040 Years in the Making<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, the concept isn\u2019t entirely new.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal futurist Richard Susskind was writing about the\u00a0<strong>\u201clegal knowledge engineer\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in his doctoral work in 1986 and in\u00a0<em>Expert Systems in Law<\/em>\u00a0in 1987.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology was primitive by today\u2019s standards, but the underlying idea was remarkably\u00a0predictive:\u00a0someone would have to take knowledge that existed inside lawyers\u2019 heads and translate it into systems that computers could use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For decades, that remained largely a\u00a0very interesting\u00a0idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI to the Rescue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly,\u00a0the technology\u00a0began catching up with the prediction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a><\/a>There is no cookie-cutter path to a career as a legal engineer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some legal engineers are former practicing lawyers. Others come from legal operations, knowledge management, paralegal roles, software development, or product management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The skill set is unusually hybrid. You need enough understanding of legal work to recognize what lawyers are\u00a0actually trying\u00a0to accomplish, an understanding of processes and workflows, and sufficient technical fluency to figure out how technology can accomplish the task.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What may matter most is something lawyers are already trained to do:<\/strong> <strong>Take a complicated problem, break it into its component parts, and figure out how the pieces fit together.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Not\u00a0to be\u00a0Confused\u00a0With\u00a0Prompt Engineering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A legal engineer isn\u2019t simply someone who is good at writing prompts for\u00a0Claude,\u00a0ChatGPT,\u00a0etc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prompting may be one tool in the toolbox. But the larger job is\u00a0<strong>systems thinking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is the legal team trying to accomplish? Which decisions require human judgment? Which don\u2019t? What can be automated? Where can AI make mistakes?
